“That means I have to get off your lap?”

He chuckled, but it was dry, humorless. “That’s what it means.”

“Are you mad at me?”

He shoved his fingers through his hair. “No. I don’t know what I am, but I’m not mad at you.”

That didn’t sound good, and we’d beensogood over the last week. Nose kisses and spankings and coffee delivery and dick riding. It had been natural and easy, barely any fighting.

I crawled off his lap, pulling on my buckle. He held on to my thigh as he drove me home, but we lapsed into silence. Normally, that would be okay. Lachlan wasn’t a big talker, and silence with him was always comfortable. Now, it might have been my sore chin and the strange circumstances, but by the time he pulled up to the curb in front of my house, I was on edge. He circled the truck like always, helping me out, then carried my bag to the door. He kissed me hard and waited for me to go inside before he walked away.

What he didn’t do was promise to text or see me later.

And it was a good thing since I didn’t see or hear from him that night.

Not once.

Not even to check in.

That smarted.
