Her mouth puckered. “God no.”

I laughed at that. “I thought maybe we’d do the public appearance thing. Get some pics on sosh meeds.”

She shuddered. “Please never call social media ‘sosh meeds’ again.” The edge of her nail traced the length of my finger. I wasn’t sure she even realized she was doing it, but I’d never been more aware of my index finger in my life. “And fine, I’ll go. But only if you give me a lesson.”

Something dormant inside my belly attempted to crawl to the surface. “I can do that.”

“Good.” She nodded decisively. “The one lesson you gave me didn’t stick.”

“That was a long time ago.” My hand tightened around hers. “I only got the one shot.”

“Yeah, well…” She lifted a shoulder, “I always wanted to learn.”

“’Kay, Boo. I’ll be teaching you. But, girl, I’m gonna need you to back it up and reverse it to your place and get your ripe body in the shower.”

She took her hand back from me and tried to slap me with it. “Shut up, dick. I don’t stink.”

I crossed my arms over my chest and leaned back in my chair. “You’re right. You smell like roses and vodka.”

That earned me a massive eye-roll and a middle finger as she made her way out of my apartment. Guess now that she’d gotten me to agree to help her, our ten-minute truce had ended.

“Why do you have two boards?”

Yael leaned against the rail in the elevator, her hair clean and silky around her shoulders, smelling fresh and sweet. She’d changed into jeans and a hoodie, looking the part of a skater girlfriend. I couldn’t wait to get her on a board again.

“You need your own if you’re going to learn,” I said.

“You’re giving me a board?”

“Nah, just a loan. If you’re seriously into it, I’ll take you to pick one out.”

She crossed her arms over her chest. “Do people really start skateboarding at twenty-six?”

I shrugged as the elevator doors opened. “Why the hell not? You’re not going to break a hip if you fall.”

She stopped short in front of me. “You’re going to let me fall?”

Hand on her waist, I moved her aside so I could step off the elevator before the doors closed on me. “I’ll take care of you, Boo.”

Her eyes narrowed as she walked beside me. “Are you really sticking with ‘Boo’?”

“Yep.” Our doorman held the door for us as we passed, then did a double take seeing the two of us walking out together, not fighting. It was just as surreal for me too. “I’m into nicknames. I’d call my special lady Boo.”

“Ah, so it’s not something clever you dreamed up just for me. That’s a relief.”

“Nah, it’s all yours. That’s the first thing you ever said to me.”

Her head turned my way. “What is?”

“Boo. It’s what you first said to me.”

And I felt like a mighty fine ass right about now. Probably should have kept that to myself. I had a tendency to speak before I thought, which was dangerous around Yael. She kept a running tally of my screwups and never let me forget them.

“Oh.” She turned away again. “I’m surprised you remember that.”

“That was the day you stomped into my world. How could I forget?”

“I thought we’d be best friends. Little did I know…”
