Naturally, I was stuck riding home with Alex. I couldn’t find an excuse quick enough to get out of it, but I hadn’t looked too hard either. I’d had such a good night filled with music and my friends, I didn’t mind his company as much as normal.

I laid my head back on the seat, tired and comfy. “Those pants are truly terrible.”

“Maybe, but they make people smile, and I’m happy as hell wearing them.”

Alex looked just as content leaning against the door to face me, knee propped on the seat, revealing his signature purple socks.

“I guess that’s all that matters.” I smiled to myself, picturing Clark seeing Alex wearing green vinyl.

“See? You’re smiling.” He nudged my leg with the toe of his boot. “I win.”

“Only for tonight, Alex.”

Through the dark back seat, his face was illuminated by the city lights. His gaze roamed over me, lips curving as he perused. Then he reached out and tugged the bottom of my hair. Our eyes connected, my breath caught, and his grin grew wide, like he’d really won a prize.

“I’ll take it.”

Only for tonight.
