Alex rubbed his thumb back and forth on the top of my hand and leaned his head back on his chair, releasing a long breath. “I wrote it before you and me.”

“Oh, of course.” I slumped on the inside, but I kept my spine lined with steel on the outside.

“That being said, I’ve never had those kinds of thoughts about anyone else. So yeah, it’s probably wishful thinking about you.”

Pleased and flattered beyond measure, my toes curled with happiness. “If you title it ‘Yael’s Song,’ it will be even more perfect.”

Alex shot me the cutest little grin. “I really doubt your brother’s going to sing a love song about his sister.”

“That’s why you should sing it.”A love song. Whoa.

His smile fell slightly. “We’ll talk about it later.”

Mo’s small, family lunch ended up being the whole band plus Diego. He said since he’d already invited Alex, he might as well invite everyone else.

Sometimes I was amazed Moses and I were brother and sister. He was a social butterfly who could have company over every single day and not get tired of it whereas I needed time to refuel my engines. But I didn’t mind this group. These were my favorite people in the world.

Post-lunch, Maeve, June, Michaela, and I sat on the floor, marveling over Simone’s lurching attempts at crawling.

“I knew she was a genius baby in the womb,” I said, turning my niece around so she could crawl in the opposite direction.

“I was banking on her being non-mobile for a few more months. Isn’t six months early to crawl?” Mic asked.

June shook her head. “She’s on the early side, but I’ve heard rumors she’s a genius baby, so that makes sense.”

That made me laugh. “I like you, June.” I arched a brow at Michaela. “Sorry, you’re just going to have to fire Leticia so I can see June all the time.”

June’s cheeks burned tomato-red. “I have classes, so—”

“Girl, I know.” She was so shy and adorable, I wanted to scoop her up and stuff her in my pocket. I assumed if I did that, she’d claw her way out and run for the hills. “How about if I put my cell number on a piece of paper and leave it in the kitchen? If you want to keep in touch, I’d love it.”

Maeve grinned at me. “What’s gotten into you? You’re so cheerful. I’m a bit frightened.”

“Yeah.” Michaela cocked her head, her brows pinched. “Your skin’s all flushed and dewy.”

Maeve gasped. “Are you…” she leaned forward, lowering her voice, “are you with someone? Do you have a man?”

Michaela snapped her fingers. “That’s it! Yael’s got a man.”

Before I could flail and shout denials, Mo squatted down behind his wife, throwing his arms over her shoulders and mine. “My sister has a man and I know nothing about it? Who is the sweater-wearing punk?”

From the couch a few feet away, Alex chuckled and lifted his chin. “Cool Girl’s got a man? He must be ugly.”

I frowned at him, fighting the urge to slap him around then kiss him stupid. “He’s hideous. And he has a big mouth.”

He scratched his chin, a mock-pensive expression on his face. “Big dick, you say? Why, Yael, that’s more information than we need.”

Santi grumbled and backhanded Alex on his chest. “Chill, Murray.”

Moses sniffed a laugh, dropping down on his butt beside me. “Is there a guy, Ya-Ya?”

“There’s always a guy, Moses.” Self-deprecation was my greatest defense mechanism.

He pulled back, giving me a long, assessing look. “Holy shit,” he whispered. “Thereisa guy.”

“Stop it.” I scooped up Simone in my arms, holding her soft, sweet body close to mine. “I don’t want to do this right now.”

“I don’t like you hiding stuff from me.” He took his daughter from me, and she snuggled her curly head beneath his chin. “What’s going on?”
