“Well, so the best gift you can give me is to tell me what exactly happened between you and Vinni when you were taken by Mariano.”

He dropped his head like the subject exhausted him. “If something happened, don’t you think you’d be the first to know?”

“No, because I think you’d think I’d tell Elio, which I wouldn’t.”

“Wouldn’t you?”

“Tell me what?” Elio heard his name and was now tuned in.

“No, I wouldn’t tell him.” I ignored Elio, trying to prove to my best friend that nothing had changed between us.

“What’s going on?” Elio leaned over to be in the conversation.

“Okay, well, that’s good to know.” Wyatt nodded.

“It is, so…” I waited while Elio grunted, and I knew he felt out of the loop.

“Nothing.”

“Something happened!” I hissed, and a few guests looked over. I smiled politely and pretended to listen to Niccola.

“What are you two talking about?” Elio’s frustration was perfect, and I turned to him with a knowing look. I had him in checkmate.

“What’s going on with you and Piero?” I waited for him to share.

He looked between Wyatt and me and contemplated if what he knew was worth finding out what we were talking about.

“The Finder’s found something and is on his way over to talk.”

“Really?” That was huge.

“Yes, so, what are you two talking about?”

“How sexy Vinni is.” Wyatt shrugged, and Elio rolled his eyes and cursed under his breath. I grinned at my best friend.

“All right. He saved me. He carried me out of the place. I might have faked being passed out.” He grinned and jiggled his head. “I was pretending to be one of those sexy book cover models being rescued by a gorgeous fireman or something. My mom reads books like that, and I know you do, too, my lovely. I mean, the covers are very sexy.”

“I wish I had witnessed that.” I smirked and moved my attention over to Niccola, who was wrapping up his speech.

“To a wonderful addition to our family and to the happy couple and their future. Now, let’s enjoy this wonderful feast.”

We clapped, and it became loud as everyone started to chat and enjoy themselves while an army of servers brought out silver-covered trays and placed them before us.

Vinni cleared his throat, and I glanced at him. He was slowly cleaning off his knife on a napkin. I followed his gaze and saw he was eyeing up Trigger and Tess, who were talking to Piero. It was pure entertainment to me that he was so terrified of Trigger. Vinni had a lot of connections with the Cartels and some other pretty scary people in Chicago, but that biker dude really spooked him. I noticed he had actually gone pale.

Dinner was unbelievably tasty, the music was perfect, and the dessert was moan-worthy.

“Have you ever known me to share my fruit?” Wyatt’s eyebrows went high, and I grinned, reading into his comment. “You eye up my last raspberry one more time and I’ll—”

“Here, mybella,” Elio slid over his dish of fruit. I made a face at Wyatt and didn’t waste any time as I cleaned the plate.

“You’re married, you won.” Wyatt rolled his eyes at Elio. “Enough with the sweetness.” He pretended to gag as he picked up his plate and left. I accepted Elio’s kiss with a dramatic flourish.

“Thank you.” I let my lips linger for a moment. “The heartbeats love fruit.”

Elio snapped his fingers and called a waiter over and requested a heaping plate of fruit for me. I kissed him again, then suddenly felt all the water I had consumed.

“Excuse me. I’ve got to visit the toilette.” He went to stand, but I pressed a hand down on his shoulder.
