My father’s company made its first million when I was ten, and by the time I turned twelve, I was waving goodbye to her on the tarmac. She moved away to Europe to carry out her dreams, which didn’t include me or my brother. She got what she wanted, though. Her dresses were featured in numerous fashion magazines and worn by some of the world’s most famous women.

She only came around during the holidays, but even those trips started to become far and few in between as I peaked in my twenties. She called on my birthday, and she called when she thought I was upsetting my father. My father passed away when I was twenty-eight, and she didn’t even bother to come to the funeral. She called, though, her raspy voice strained in my ear as she talked to my uncle about the business and the money. Once I turned thirty, I stopped hearing from her altogether. I honestly would forget she existed until my uncle would mention her name in passing. Now she’s here, disrupting my life once again, making Remy uncomfortable, and making me upset.

“He’s always had a sweet spot for nipples. Couldn’t get him off of mine until he was two.” A smug look stretched across her withering face as her eyes diverted from me to Remy. She was sizing her up, her hallow brown eyes scanned every inch of her, and her frail lips parted. I held my breath, waiting for whatever bullshit she was getting ready to spew.

“I don’t care for people who like to piss me off my rocker, even if they are my mother.” I stood behind Remy, letting my chin graze against the top of her head. Her scent calmed me, the familiar smell of vanilla and honey.

“Oh, well, I see that boarding school was a complete waste because you still have no manners.”

“Manners? I have manners. I’m just selective on who I use them with.”

I pulled Remy’s arm and guided her to the bedroom. We had a long morning, and by the way, her feet were starting to swell. I knew she needed a break. My mother watched as I walked away, and once I turned the corner, an exasperated breath slipped through my lips. I hadn’t even known I was holding my breath the entire time. I guided Remy to the bed and made sure she was snuggled firmly against her pregnancy pillow before removing her ballet flats.

“I’m not tired.” She whined before a yawn slipped off her tongue

“I beg the differ, princess.” I tossed the plush throw sitting on the edge of the bed over her body.

She lifted and pouted her sweet lips, “Why is your mom here?”

Her words were laced with worry, and it made me burn with fury. I stroked her cheek and placed a soft kiss on her forehead before gently forcing her back down onto the pillow.

“I don’t know, but I’m going to find out. Now close your eyes and rest. I’ll come wake you later.”

She shifted and let her body melt into the softness below her. She needed rest, and I needed to deal with the shit show standing in my living room. I walked out of the bedroom and back into the living room, where I saw my mother sitting innocently on the couch.

“How much money did you give the desk attendant? I was specific about having you put on my no-see list.”

She ignored my question and reached over toward the coffee table, and grabbed her tea. A cream-colored teapot sat on the glass table next to a plate of blueberry scones. She knew I hated blueberry anything, and here she was, filling the whole penthouse with the nauseating smell.

“Where is she?” she said, taking a break from sipping her tea to open her godforsaken mouth.

“That’s not what I asked you. Who let you in, and why are you here?” I interjected the view she was enjoying as my body towered in front of her.

“So, did you get the paternity test?” Her cup returned to her lips, and she took another small sample, careful not to burn that vile tongue of hers.

“No. Now answer my bloody question?”

Her eyes went wide, and her head cocked to the side. Her lips attempted to curl into a smile, but they didn’t budge.

“Wanted to see how you were dealing with this whole baby issue. You don’t call me, so I had to find out through the grapevine.”

“It’s not an issue. She’s my woman, and those are my babies in her belly. I don’t call because you stopped calling me years ago.”

“Babies?” she scoffed. Her head shook from side to side as she tried to grasp the idea of me having more than one kid. A black-hearted laugh filled the air as her hollow eyes stared into mine.

“Good luck with that. Honestly, I’m quite happy for you, even if you are creating a family with a whore. I thought you would never have kids. Anywho that’s not why I’m here.”

My teeth gritted against one another as her vile words oozed into my ears. If she weren’t my mother, I would have called security and had her arrested for trespassing.

“Why?” I asked.

Heat radiated off my face, and I was sure she could see the steam seeping out of my ears at this point.

“Do you remember the Kingsley’s? The family who owns those six luxuries hotels? The ones where a night cost around four figures?”

I nodded, and my eyes rolled to the back of my head as I placed my hands on my hips.

“Well, apparently, there is an issue with some of the land we own in the northeast. According to your uncle, the land somehow legally belongs to them, and they can, and most likely will get their lawyers involved—”
