I pursed my lips and nodded. “Well, I haven’t been that guy in a long time. Playboy Brett died years ago.”

“Whatever. I can’t tell you if you passed his little test.” She shrugged and lifted the plastic cup to her lips.

With questions on the edge of my tongue, she turned and stormed off into the house. Chalking it up to teenage emotions, I sauntered over to a comfortable lawn chair nestled under the large tree. Unfortunately, my attempt at getting comfortable and finishing off this bottle of beer was interrupted when a scream erupted from upstairs.

CHAPTER3

Salacious Truths~Cora

Every musclein my body tensed as I looked at the sights happening before me. It was as if I had been thrown into an alternate universe, with my worst nightmare coming to life. My longtime boyfriend, the guy who I planned my whole life around, the guy I was going to marry and eventually lose my virginity to, was straddled on top of Jewel, with his cock nestled comfortably between her fake tits. They stumbled off of my bed, and I never wanted to burn something so badly in my life. Jewel scrambled to a corner, with her arms crossed across her chest, and Josh fell to his knees in front of me.

Groveling soon commenced, his lips moved, and with furrowed brows his hands found my wrist. I heard nothing, muteness surrounded me, and my eyes burned.

“Babe, please…” Josh held on to my wrist, the nails of his fingers digging into my flesh.

I pulled away, my sight now a blurry mess due to the tears pooling up on the edge of my lashes.

I took a step back and then another until my back met a hard chest. I turned to find Brett wide-eyed as he sliced his gaze from Josh then to Jewel before his eyes settled on me.

“Babe,” Josh pleaded from his knees.

His hand landed on my ankle, and it made my stomach churn. Brushing past Brett, I ran down the stairs and grabbed my keys off the hook near the front door. My brain was in a fog, and my emotions were a mess. My legs sprinting toward my car. Ignoring Brett’s voice, I pulled out of the driveway.

My throat thick with sobs—Adele blasting from the speakers. I didn’t hear the pop of my tire, and my heart dropped into my stomach as I swerved into oncoming traffic. Angry honks accompanied by a string of curse words seeped off the tongues of irritated drivers, and I pulled to the side of the road and slammed on the brakes. I thought this day couldn’t get any worse, and then a fire engine red pickup truck slowed behind me, and Brett hopped down from the driver's side. Wiping the tears from my eyes, I pushed open my door and climbed out.

“I don’t need your help,” I spat as I kicked my sandal at the busted tire.

“I find that hard to believe.”

He sauntered closer, his boots crushing dirt and rocks with each step. I dropped my chin to my chest. Here I was, on the side of the road, in a swimsuit, with damp hair and a busted tire. Steel toed boots came into my line of sight and a calloused finger clipped under my chin.

“You okay?” His voice was soft and his gaze softer.

I snapped my chin away. “Do I look like I’m okay? This is all your fault.” I shoved my fingers into his chest, hoping to push him away, but he stayed planted.

“Is it?”

“Yeah, it is,” I deadpanned. I lifted and placed my hands on my hips. “If you hadn’t come, then none of this would have happened.” I placed my palms to my cheeks, covering my embarrassment.

He stepped closer, the strong scent of sweat and cologne filling my lungs with each ragged breath. “Are you going to fill me in, or do I have to guess?” The corner of his mouth lifted to one side, and I hated myself for wanting to keep my eyes on his.

I told him he was only invited to the party because dad was doing a fidelity test, but once the words slipped off my tongue, waves of tears trickled down my cheeks, because the joke was obviously on me. I turned my back to him and leaned against my car.

My skin burned from the scorching metal, but I’d rather feel that than the pain that tightened around my heart. Hoping he would take that as his cue to leave, he did the opposite and closed the space between us; the fabric of his shirt pressing into my back sent tingles down my spine.

“Maybe you need to see the glass half full instead of half-empty, baby girl.”

He turned me to face him, his calloused thumb found my cheek, and he swiped away the fallen tears. I should have been pulling away, widening the gap between us, but instead, my body sizzled to his touch, like it was secretly trying to tell me something. My mind was a mess…and so was my heart. A tornado of rage and dejection ripped me to shreds. Maybe that’s why yielded to his soft chocolate eyes. If I thought this day couldn’t get any worse, I was wrong, because he leaned in, and instead of pushing him away, I tugged at his shirt and my parted lips met his. Brett's tongue dove in and danced with mine, and then he pulled away. Not thinking, I chased his lips, finding only air. I opened my eyes to find him turning back toward his truck.

He grabbed a tire iron and got to work getting my spare tire out of my trunk.

“This donut is only a temporary fix, you’re going to need a new tire. I’ll pick one up.”

“It’s fine. Dad has a few spare tires in the garage. One of those should be a match.

He wiped his hands on his already dirty jeans.

He stepped closer to me and tucked a piece of hair behind my ear. “Ever drove on a donut?”
