“Oh, okay,” Jeff says. “I’m sure he’s got a lot to say to you, too, sugar. You got it.”
I hang up the phone and head back upstairs.
I’m not looking forward to that call once Norbert wakes up.
Now, though, it’s time to solve this mystery once and for all.
Inside the room, Becky, Percy and Sammi are seated on the couch. It’s as if the Drunken Sluts Convention has been called to order, and they’re going over last week’s minutes.
“How’s the tiger?” Becky asks when she sees me walk in.
“He’s good. I’m told he’ll be reunited with his trainer soon.”
Percy tosses me a water bottle. I twist off the lid and start to guzzle it down.
“Did you get a chance to talk to Norbert?” she asks. “Did he tell you what happened last night?”
I finish my sip and set the bottle down on the nightstand—the one on the opposite side of the broken chandelier. I take a seat on the bed.
“No, but I did talk to Jeff,” I reply.
The others lean in, waiting to hear the details.
“I learned three things: First, he and Norbert already know we’re here. Second, we ran into them last night. Third, I still don’t know what we did, but I get the feeling that I didn’t enjoy it.”
“That’s a start,” Sammi says. “We still don’t know how we got here, either, but while you were gone, we did figure out how we got drunk so quickly.”
Sammi reaches into her purse and pulls out a folded-up piece of paper.
I take it from her hands and unfold it. It appears to be a recipe.
My vision is still a little blurry, but when I squint, I can just make out the words. “Margarita Fizzers?”
“It’s an edible bath bomb for your margarita,” Sammi explains. “You drop it in a shot of tequila, and it fizzes up like a bubble bath. I remember packing the ingredients in my suitcase, but I don’t remember taking them out.”
Percy points to my still-damp clothes. “If I had to guess, I’d say the tequila, the fizzers, and the four of us plus the tiger ended up in the bathtub last night.”
Becky, Sammi, and I groan. This is exactly what we were afraid of.
