“Don’t say that, Mysti!”

“Aren’t you even a little bit curious?”

“Sure, I was plenty curious when I woke up this morning.” I shrug my shoulders. “But now, all I want is a hot shower and some honest-to-God food, not some olives from the bar at the Post Office.”

“I want to skip this part and go straight to my fucking happily ever after,” I continue. “I want to get married—”

“But youaremarried—”

I can’t blame Becky for pointing that out. I know how happy me being married to Brendon makes her, but I didn’t plan for it, and I can’t do that to my actual fiancé.

“I want to get married to Norbert.”

“Do you? Like, do youreally?”

I pause for a moment, thinking about everything we know from last night and everything that led up to this moment.

“Yes, I do. Norbert loves me, and he’s reliable and dependable…”

“And boring!” Percy interjects. “He doesn’t like you hanging out with us or doing anything that makes you…you. What’s the good in that?”

“He’s good for me,” I repeat, and I take a step back. “Given my track record—and last night is Exhibit A—I need someone like Norbert. At least I know he’ll never cheat on me or screw me over in any other way.”

“But what about Brendon?” Becky asks, and though she’s trying to hide it, I can hear the insecurity in her voice.

“Brendon’s great. But he’s got a fiancée too, and it’s not fair for either of us to just ditch the person we promised to marry in favor of a drunken night and the opportunity to be married by Elvis.”

We all fall silent for a minute as I step back and lean against the wall.

Brendon was my college crush, and I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t dreamed of marrying him at least once. But it was in the past, a long time ago, though some of those feelings are still there—and the memory of his touch on my pussy alone is enough to get me wet all over again.

I can’t say that I’ve ever felt like that about Norbert, but that’s not the point.

Norbert’s never gagged me with a stack of crisp hundred-dollar bills as he ate me out behind an illegal lobster fighting ring. And as fucking hot and mind-blowing as it was, that’s not enough to build a life around.

That’s not what normal people do.

Normal girls don’t have to solve the mystery behind kilograms of cocaine and burning rental cars. And maybe it’s time for me to be normal.

If only it were that easy…

“And do you know what else has been bothering me?” I ask the girls, still staring off into the distance. The air is thick and still, but there’s a slow rumbling from somewhere over the horizon or around the corner that I can’t quite place.

After all, this place should have been deserted during the day.

“What else is bothering you, Mysti?” Sammi asks.

“I can’t…I can’t shake the feeling that we’re being watched.”

“What? Are you serious?”

“Yeah.” I nod and keep staring out past my friends. For a second, they all follow my line of sight, but then they turn back to me, confused.

“Ever since we left the hotel, I’ve felt someone’s eyes on me.”

“That’s so weird,” Percy says as she comes and stands beside me, putting her arm around my shoulder.

“I know, right? But I can feel it.”
