God, that was even worse. My vision blurred as tears sprang to my eyes, and it even hurt to breathe. A week ago, I would have been upset because I was a hard worker that didn’t deserve this but now, my heart felt as though it had been shattered into a million pieces.

I needed to get out of here. I couldn’t stand the thought of breaking down and crying in front of him. Snatching my purse off my desk, I made a beeline for the elevator, hoping that he wouldn’t follow.

But I wasn’t that lucky.

“Sophie, wait,” he demanded, his voice close behind me.

I straightened my spine as I kept on going. “No. Just leave me alone.”

God, what am I going to do about my grandmother?

I wouldn’t be able to pay for her to stay in the home without this job. I was so screwed…

Reaching the elevator, I jabbed at the down button three times, silently begging the doors to open right away. But they didn’t, probably because my replacement was currently riding down to the lobby.

Letting out a frustrated sigh, I turned to the stairwell, not caring that it was a long way down. I just wanted to get away from Connor before I completely lost it. Unfortunately, that wasn’t going to be possible. He was standing directly in my path and he didn’t look like he was going to budge anytime soon.
