“Can you blame me?” I grinned at the thought of those adorable little girls. “You’ve seen how cute they are.”

“You’re such a softie,” she said, gathering up the papers she’d come in here to copy.

“Well, don’t tell anyone,” I said, my tone wry. “I have an image to maintain.”

Sophie chuckled and led the way out into the hall. “Your secret’s safe with me. Now get going before someone comes along needing something and you’re stuck here for another few hours. I’ll cover for you.”

“You’re the best,” I said, turning to head in the other direction, toward the elevators. “Have a good weekend, and I’ll see you Monday.”

“You too,” she called out distractedly over her shoulder as she walked back to her desk, her attention already absorbed by the paperwork in her hand.

I took a deep breath, and I could have sworn that her perfume lingered in the air. No more small, confined rooms like that, I promised myself. Without the ability to put distance between us, I felt like I was losing control, and that was a precarious place to be.
