Albert blinked. “Did you just tell me you love me and call me a fool in the same sentence?”

“Well, of course. What else should I do?”

He wrapped her in his arms, not worried about what his father was doing behind him. “I love you right back, you fool!”

She laughed. “Maybe someday we’ll be able to say those words without the word fool attached.”

“It might take a while…”

Epilogue

It was just after the first of the year when Alice’s labor pains started. She had wanted to have the doctor see to her delivery, but she went into labor during an ice storm. The only people who could make it over to help were Susan and Mrs. H.

Her labor was quick, much too quick for her first child. At least according to Susan, it was too quick. Alice though it took much too long for the baby to come.

Shortly after noon on the coldest day of the year, Rachel Grace Dailey made her appearance. She was perfect with ten fingers and ten toes.

When she was presented to her father for the first time, he swore she gave him a smile, though everyone knew babies didn’t smile when they were less than an hour old.

“She’s the most beautiful baby in the whole world,” Albert said, sinking onto the bed beside his wife.

“I was just thinking the same thing.” Alice traced her finger along the baby’s cheek. “But I think I’m done having babies. If you still want that dozen, we’ll have to adopt the other eleven.”

“That’s fine. I don’t think I want you to go through that again anyway. Not even for another perfect baby like this one.” He rested his forehead against hers. “You did good.”

“We did good.” She smiled at him. “I still love you, fool.”

“And I love you. Mama.”
