“How can I do that when you’re keeping a big secret from me? No, I’ll have to keep calling you Mrs. Royal.”

A frown was her only response as the older woman went into her room and shut the door.

Cameron frowned at Cassandra. “I really don’t feel right telling you yet. Soon.”

“How soon?” Cassandra asked. “We’re married. It’s not like I’m going to run off screaming all your secrets. I enjoy what we do together too much to tell anyone anything.”

He shook his head. “Soon.” As soon as he knew she loved him, then he would tell her what she wanted to know. He couldn’t keep it inside too much longer anyway. He hated to keep secrets from her.

At that moment, watching her look at him sadly, he realized he’d already fallen in love. He’d known the woman just over forty-eight hours, and he loved her. It didn’t seem possible. “Is that rotten little thing sleeping with us again?” he asked.

She smiled. “She’s sleeping with me. If you want to sleep with me, then she’s sleeping with us.”

“Sassy Cassie. You are really a woman with your own mind, aren’t you?”

“Would you have me any other way?”

Oh, he’d have her however she wanted to come to him. If he had her by his side, he felt like a new man. It was as if none of the nastiness that had plagued him since his father’s death was there anymore. Instead, she filled his heart with gladness.

“Let’s go to bed.” He took the kitten from her and placed her on his shoulder. Minnie looked everywhere, seeming excited to be up so high and to see so many new things. She rode on his shoulder all the way up the stairs and into their bedroom, and then he put her in the kitten bed.

Minnie jumped out and climbed onto the bed, watching them to see what they’d do next. Cassandra didn’t mind, and she immediately started stripping.

Cameron groaned. “Why is the kitten watching me undress?”

“Well, you look pretty amazing with no clothes on. I’m sure she loves looking at you just like I do.”

“You’re not supposed to tell me that!”

“Oh? Who made that rule? I figured that I could say whatever I wanted as long as we both enjoy being together. Is that not true?”

He chuckled. “I suppose it is. You’re so reasonable.”

“It comes from being a part of such a big family. I think we should have at least a dozen kids.”

“I’m not so sure. What if I’m a terrible father?” he asked, thinking of his own father.

“Then I’ll be the best mother alive to balance you out. How could I be anything else? Besides, you’re going to be a good father. Look how good you are with little Minnie Mouth.”

“Minnie Mouth really does suit her.” he asked.

“She’s always so mouthy. Talking back and all. Nothing else would fit her half as well!”

He chuckled. “I think you’re right.” He looked back at the kitten. “What are we going to do with her? I’m not ready to sleep.”

She smiled. “I know what you’re thinking about. Maybe I can get her to sleep in her little bed for long enough for us to do what we want to do.”

“You think?” he asked.

She picked Minnie up and stroked her head, talking softly to her. The kitten was out within a couple of minutes. After putting her in her bed, Cassandra looked at Cameron who was already undressed and very obviously ready for her. “What would you have done if I couldn’t get her to sleep?” she asked.

He reached for her, his hands going to the buttons on the back of her dress. “I guess I’d have learned to make love to my wife with a kitten watching.”

Cassandra giggled. She was so happy she was married to Cameron, but she was also happy to have Minnie in her life. What could go wrong?

*****

Every day for the rest of the month, Cassandra waited for Cameron to tell her what he was hiding, and every day she worried a little more. She couldn’t understand why he couldn’t trust her with his secrets when he trusted her with his body? It didn’t make sense to her at all.
