Caroline smiled. “I agree. But in a month, I get to have the most beautiful baby in the world.”

“I suppose I could agree with that.” Constance reached out and squeezed Caroline’s hand, not able to quite reach Abigail. “Thank you for being here for the birth.”

“I owe you so much,” Abigail said. “I never would have made it through after the baby was born without you.”

Felicity peeked her head up over the bottom of the bed, staring at Constance. She’d obviously been frightened by the screams she heard. “I’m okay Felicity. I promise.”

With the reassurance the cat ran off to the other room. “We need to go get Leonard and Ma Berry,” Caroline said. “They’re going to want to see the baby…and know its gender.”

“Yes, they will. Thank you for coming when the midwife couldn’t. I panicked a great deal in those first minutes.” Constance shook her head. “How dare someone else go into labor right before me?”

Abigail laughed softly. “It worked out. We were here for you.”

Abigail and Caroline left the room to fetch Leonard and Ma Berry. When Leonard came in, she could see the worry on his face. “I’m fine. And the baby—your son—is perfect. He has ten fingers and ten toes and a set of lungs that will keep us up far too many nights.”

Leonard sat beside her on the bed, gazing at their son, while Ma Berry stood over them. “I’ll be seeing to your meals for three days. It takes that long to recover from giving birth. After that, you’ll see to your own family.”

“Thank you,” Constance said. She had been warned by the other sisters that this would be her only gift upon the birth of her child from Ma Berry. “I really appreciate it.”

“I’ll stay in one of the upstairs rooms until you are capable of caring for Leonard and the boy on your own.” With that, Ma Berry left the room.

Leonard shook his head. “She didn’t even ask what we’re going to name him.”

“I know she didn’t. That’s all right. What shall we name him?” Constance asked. She’d finally gotten used to his mother, and she could tolerate her ways.

“I’d like to name him either Michael after my father, or David, after your father.”

Constance smiled. “I like both names. Let’s name this one Michael, and the next boy will be David.”

“You’re willing to have another baby?” he asked. “I’m not sure I’m ready for that. You were in such pain! I could hear your screams from outside.”

“Of course, I’ll have another. I barely remember the pain. The baby made the whole world melt away as soon as I held him. Michael. Michael Leonard Berry.”

“Thank you for my son!”

“I hope we can have many more.”
