He nodded, reluctant to try to speak again.

“You know what her problem is?”

He waited to see if the question was rhetorical, but when the pause was long enough, he asked, “Ah, what?”

“She’s jealous.” Kay smiled at him. “And she should be. Not only am I ten times more powerful a witch than she is, but,” — she leaned in and whispered— “I’ve got a hot boyfriend she’d love to get her hands on. I almost feel sorry for her.”

Damon wasn’t sure what he should say. He supposed Jessie was jealous of Kay and her abilities, but the woman had done very well in her business life. Perhaps it was just old feelings being dredged up after running into Kay. He didn’t know, but he was aware that the less he was involved with whatever difficulties there were between Kay and Jessie, the better off he’d be. He was eager to change the subject, and when he noticed the hardware store, he said, “Do you think we should stop by and see Jeannie? You know, schmooze a little, stay in her good graces.”

“Sure. Would you mind putting a bale of hay in the back of your Land Rover? I think we’ll use all we have left filling the coop again, and it would save us a trip.”

“Not a problem. It gives us a reason to go.” And a reason to talk about anything other than Jessie Green.

“I cannot wait!”Corinne cried out as she twirled around the living room. She was wearing a black, knee-length dress that had a full skirt splaying out. “Mom, you’re amazing.”

Eileen Knight was in a longer dress that had wispy layers of sheer black fabric that reminded Kay of something Stevie Nicks, one of her mother’s favorite singers, would wear. “Thank you, dear, but Bri is the one who tweaked the patterns to make them unique.”

“She is a crafty one,” Amelia joked. Her dress had a snug bodice and a low neckline, showing off the curves the oldest Knight girl possessed.

Kay looked down at her simple black shift dress that fell mid-thigh to show off her legs. It had a sheer cape attached at the shoulders. The cape was merely an adornment that fluttered behind her when she walked, making her outfit the most practical of them all. Exactly how she liked it. Her mother and Bri had done a fantastic job adapting the dress patterns to fit the personalities of each Knight witch as well as showcase their best features.

“Ugh!” Bri exclaimed as her feet thudded erratically on the steps she descended. She was struggling with a large trunk. “What is in here? A dead body?”

“You didn’t grab Ida’s coffin did you?” Eileen asked in a serious tone that made Bri halt in her tracks.

“What?”

Kay joined her sisters as they laughed at Bri’s reaction, and Eileen said, “I’m teasing.”

“Very funny,” Bri lowered the trunk and let it fall the last few inches, making it thud loudly as dust flew into the air. Eileen had sent her up to the attic to get the hats and boots that had been in storage since the last Halloween haunting they’d done sixteen years ago.

Amelia and Corinne walked over to open the trunk as Kay watched. She knew they both wanted first dibs on what was inside. While the hats would only vary by size, the boots were unique. Kay was just as vain as her sisters, but she hadn’t cared about fashion the last time she’d seen the footwear available and didn’t have the vivid recollections her sisters did. While they knew which boots they wanted, Kay figured she wouldn’t end up with something a little magic couldn’t fix.

“Oh my gosh,” Corrine said as she lifted up a tiny pair of boots. “Would you look at these? Bri, you must have worn them the last time we did Halloween.”

Bri took the small black boots that had a tiny buckle on the sides. “Awww. They’re darling. One of you guys has to have a kid soon. These are making my ovaries cry.”

Eileen chuckled at her daughter. “Careful. Wish hard enough and it’ll be you having the first baby.”

Bri dropped the boots as if they were on fire, making Amelia laugh. She reached for them and got a faraway look in her eyes that told Kay her oldest sister was hoping to be the first. She and James were engaged, and Kay figured once they were married they’d waste no time trying to start a family.

“Mine!” Corinne clutched a pair of boots to her chest, and Kay could see by the stiletto heels they were footwear she’d be happy to forego.

Amelia picked a pair with a clunky heel before Bri dove in to pull the rest out to lay on the floor. “They’re all beautiful,” she said. “I’m not sure how to choose.”

“Oh, Mom.” Amelia reached over to pick up a pair of cowboy boots that were covered in leather flowers and beads. “These are so you.”

“They really are,” Kay agreed.

“Do either of you want them?” Eileen asked Bri and Kay.

The two shook their heads before Kay noticed a thigh-high pair that had a zipper down the back. She reached for them.

“Sexy,” Bri said. “Try them on so we can see.”
