His father narrowed his eyes as his gaze darted around at each one of his children. “You boys’ll watch out for Natalie?”

“Of course,” Will said. He put his arm around his sister and smiled. “But she’s the one who’ll be looking out for us.”

“Hmpf,” Paul answered, which was as close to a yes as they were going to get.

Natalie let out a little squeal. “You guys, my first Halloween haunting that I can remember. I can’t wait!”

Damon smiled at his sister. He felt the same excitement. He was happy that his family was repairing their rift with the Knights, and he looked forward to a night of mischief with Kay. If he had his way, this was going to be the evening that finally brought their families together again.

But to do that, he had to make sure their plan was solid, and he said, “Does anyone have any objections if I outline our activities and responsibilities for Halloween? I want this to go well.”

“None here,” Will said as he began to toss hats at all of them. “I think it’s a smart thing to do.”

Eric put his hat on his head. “I’m on board as well.”

Natalie grinned as she adjusted a hat that was too big and had fallen over her eyes. “Tell me what to do.” She bounced a little on her feet. “Did I mention I’m excited?”

Damon laughed at his sister. “Good. You should be, because we’re going to make it fun.”

“Exactly,” Will said. “Should we meet with the Knight women to go over our plans?”

“Me! I want to,” Natalie said, making Damon sure she was itching for chance to get to know the Knight witches.

“You know, that’s not a bad idea.” Damon looked over at his father, but before he could say anything to Paul, the man switched on the TV. Damon said, “I’ll set up a time for it to happen and whoever can go should.”

His father’s attitude was interesting. Paul had been rather quiet about his dislike for the Knight family tonight, and it made Damon wonder if the man was ready to let his grudge go. He hoped so, because while it was too soon to ask Kay, Damon knew it wouldn’t be long before the two families would be united by a marriage. He was sure children would come after that, and sadness filled him as he thought about how his mother would be missing out. He didn’t have any idea where she was and had never tried to look, but perhaps a grandchild might be the lure Sally needed to come home.

He chuckled softly to himself about his wishful thinking as he watched his brothers try on capes. Maybe being in love did make a Brannigan man crazy, or maybe it was Kay’s kind ways influencing his heart. Either way, Damon noticed his focus lately had turned from himself to those he loved. Perhaps he had been bewitched, because he believed the Brannigan and Knight families could become close once again.

Kay

Their feetthudded over the worn hardwood floor as Damon and Kay walked an aisle of the hardware store in search of candy buckets.

“Kay! Kay is that you?” Edna Butler rushed toward her. “What do you know about juicers?”

“Ah, not much I’m afraid.”

“Oh!” Edna stood a little taller in her white sweatshirt with a big red lobster on the front that she had dressed up with a small red scarf tied at her neck. She batted her eyelashes at Damon as if she’d just noticed him. “I bet you know a thing or two, Damon Hawke.”

He chuckled, and Kay said, “This is Edna.”

“And Edith!” Edna’s twin called out as she hurried over to them. Her white sweatshirt had a blue whale on the front, and she was wearing big blue dangly earrings as her accessory. “We’re the Butler twins.” She winked at Damon. “I’msureyou’ve heard of us.”

He almost snorted and covered it up with a cough. “I have.”

“Well, what are you two waiting for?” Edna grabbed Damon by the hand. “The juicers are over here.” Edith grabbed his other hand and the pair began to lead him away.

He glanced back at Kay, who followed along snickering softly at how the women were manhandling him. When they got to the juicers, Kay noticed there were a few options and asked, “What do you need a juicer for?”

“Juice,” Edna said as if Kay had asked the stupidest question in the world.

Damon said, “I think what Kay is asking is do you plan to make a lot of juice or is this for fresh fruit juice.”

“Well, if you must know,” Edith said with a coy look. “We’re going on a juice fast to look good in our Halloween costumes.”

Damon’s brows lifted, but he said. “Ah. Whatever for? You ladies don’t look like you could lose a pound without the danger of blowing away.”
