Epilogue

Kay

A chilly breezeteased the few remaining leaves on the trees with the coming of winter as Kay inhaled the scents of bonfire smoke and apples. The excitement and magic of Halloween buzzed in the air like a live wire as she took in the scene before her. Her mother had just called up their brooms and they were in the backyard watching Amelia give Bri a crash course in driving one, even though their youngest sister didn’t ask for it.

“Lift the end gently!” The oldest Knight sister cried out as Bri shot nearly straight up into the sky.

Corinne bumped her shoulder against Kay’s. “Ten bucks says Bri did that to torture her.”

A moment later Bri swooped down, and Amelia squealed as she jumped out of Bri’s way when she flew by so closely that Amelia’s dress flew up from the wind. Their younger sister glanced over her shoulder and they could see her smirk, proving Bri knew exactly how to handle a broom.

Kay laughed with her twin. “Motherhood is going to be brutal for Amelia.”

Eileen had come over to stand with the girls. “Or mellow her out. Lord knows that wouldn’t be a bad thing.” She looked toward the driveway. “Any word from Damon about when they’re coming?”

“He said when they’re ready,” Kay said. “I swear the Brannigan boys are worse than we are when it comes to being on time.”

Her twin nodded toward woods where five witches on brooms were flying in. “Speak of the devil.”

“Corinne!” Amelia said. “Do you really want to tempt him like that on Halloween?”

Kay rolled her eyes as she watched the Brannigans land. She took in the handsome men in capes and noticed Natalie in a long dress among them.

“Oh my god! Kay!” Corinne cried. “Look at Damon’s cape!”

Kay had just seen the flash of purple in Damon’s cape herself as he walked toward them, and she gaped at him. He was wearing the cape she’d described back when Amelia had tried to perform a love spell in the attic the summer before magic camp had happened. “It can’t be,” Kay said. They had all been sure the love spell hadn’t worked, especially since it was only supposed to be for Amelia.

But maybe in a twisty-turny way it had. She thought about how Amelia had asked for James but didn’t get him until over a decade later. Corinne had asked for Noah, and they were together now, too. But when Kay’s juice had spilled and she’d gotten a refill, she’d actually asked for two different men. Tucker, who was clearly wrong for her, and a famous wizard with a purple silk-lined cape.

Damon leaned in and kissed Kay quickly. “Don’t look so surprised. I told you we’d be here in plenty of time.”

“Your cape,” she said while smooth silk caressed her fingers as she fondled the garment to make sure it was real.

“You like it?” He asked.

“Shelovesit,” Corinne said before walking off to talk to Damon’s siblings.

Eileen chuckled. “It reminds me of the one you had as a little boy. You were quite attached to it. Do you remember it?”

Damon shook his head.

“You were only two,” Eileen said. “Sally had gotten you a cape with a purple silk lining for Halloween that year. Once you put it on, you refused to take it off. I can still remember you running as fast as you could in our backyard hoping it would help you fly free as a bird.”

Kay knew they’d probably both been out back playing together, and she wondered if she’d instinctively known at the age of two that Damon was the witch she was destined to marry.

Bri let out a squeal, and she looked over to see her sister was with Natalie, and she guessed from their gestures that they were exchanging compliments on each other’s clothes.

Amelia excused herself to go greet Noah and James in the driveway. They’d gone to get a few last-minute supplies. Kay turned her attention to Damon. “It’s nice to have our families together like this.” The planning that had occurred between the Knights and Brannigans over the last few days while getting ready for Halloween had been fun, and like Damon had hoped for his sister, she and Bri had instantly become friends.

“Hey, look at that,” Damon said.

Kay turned and saw her mother hugging Paul Brannigan. When she let go, he kept an arm around her waist and their heads were together as they spoke in voices Damon and Kay couldn’t hear.

Kay turned to Damon with wide eyes. Paul had been gruff in the few exchanges she’d had with him and had refused to take part in the planning. It was only that morning, when he called up the family’s brooms, that he’d decided to participate in the festivities. “I thought your Dad didn’t like my mother.”

Damon shook his head. “Magicisin the air. Stranger things have happened on Halloween.”

That was probably true, but Kay was thinking that not many happier things had. They had begun the amazing life they’d share together. She couldn’t help imagining a two-year-old Damon running around the yard trying to fly while Kay was likely chasing after him, and she hoped it wouldn’t be too many more Halloweens before a new generation of Knight witches would be playing in that same yard.

She let out a sigh and leaned against Damon. As he wrapped his arm around her, he asked, “Are you as happy as I am?”

“Yes.” Kay gazed up at him and remembered seeing him the day she’d set out with a plan to get what she wanted from Tucker Eagan. What she hadn’t known was that he was only a step on the way toward the future she was destined to have. One that had been set in motion years ago. And now, she was finally ready to realize it all. “I love you, Damon.”

“I love you too, my darling Knight witch. What do you say we show this town what Halloween is all about?” He snapped his fingers, and his broom appeared and hovered before them.

She chuckled as she called her ride, too. “I can’t think of anything I’d rather do.” Kay mounted her broom and flew off into the night with her witch by her side.
