“Oh,” Nora sighed, and Damon looked at her to see she had a hand on her chest and tears in her eyes. “Margaret is finally reunited with her love.”

“Yes,” Kay said with a dreamy look on her face that Damon knew was fake. “She is.”

Nora frowned at Damon. “But you—”

“My apologies.” He bowed to Nora. “Damon Hawke at your service.”

“Oh! I’ve heard about you. You’re that famous wizard. Aren’t you going to be performing at the fair in a few days?”

“Yes, I am. Do you plan to go?”

“I wouldn’t miss it.” Nora gave Kay and Damon a sheepish grin. “I’m utterly fascinated with magic. If only I had been born a witch.”

“Come up to the stage before the show and let one of my crew know you’re in the audience. I’ll be sure to call you up as a volunteer.”

“You will?” The older woman practically squealed. “Oh my gosh. That would be so amazing.” Her expression softened. “What did you promise Margaret? It’s not anything horrible, is it?”

Damon chuckled because he imagined Kay and Tucker’s date might be just that. While he’d thought Celia was out to torture him, it occurred to him that he may have been wrong. Perhaps the spirit thought it was best if Kay figured out for herself that Tucker wasn’t the right guy for her so she’d be able to see how right Damon actually was. “No,” he said. “Nothing horrible at all.” He smiled at Kay. “She was a ghost with a soft side for love.”

When they got down to the entryway, Tucker was waiting for them. “That was amazing. You guys were great. I—” He let out a breath, and his shoulders slumped a little as if he felt defeated. “I don’t think I’m cut out for ghost hunting.”

Kay touched his arm tenderly. “It’s hard when you don’t know what’s going on. I can hear and see spirits, but you had no idea what was happening. I’d struggle with that, too.”

Damon’s jealousy tempted him not to be as kind, but he knew how empathetic Kay was and realized she’d appreciate it if he was equally kind. “She’s right. We have an advantage you don’t.”

The radio in the police car crackled, and they heard Tucker being summoned through the car’s open window. Relief washed over his face, and he said, “I should answer that.”

While he dealt with his call, Kay and Damon said goodbye to Nora, and when they headed back to the cars, Tucker got out to talk to them. “Jeannie needs me at the hardware store. Seems they have a shoplifter in custody.”

“Oh, no,” Kay said. “Should Damon and I head to the station on the mainland to get started on the report?”

“Yes,” Tucker said with relief. “That would be great. I’ll catch up to you when I’m done.”

Damon smiled, because it took twenty minutes to get to the mainland, which was connected to the island by a bridge, and another five or so to get to the police station. He’d have a half hour of Kay’s undivided attention. Plenty of time to sell her on the ghost hunting show.

As Tucker pulled away, Damon walked Kay to his car and opened the passenger door for her. She scowled at him. “You didn’t come to Night Meadow Island to see my mother.”

“No, Kay. I’m here for you.”

Kay

Damon had cometo the island for her?Kay’s heart betrayed her by skipping a beat before she realized how foolish she was being. Just because she remembered their kiss years ago, that didn’t mean he did. Besides, she didn’t even like Damon Brannigan. He was an obnoxious wizard from an arrogant family, and he was most likely a player. She clicked her seatbelt into place and reminded herself to be on guard.

Damon stepped on the gas to drive away from Nora Lang’s house. “Celia told me you had her haunt Nora’s house so you could impress Tucker. How did that work out for you?”

She glanced over at him, sure he’d be gloating, but surprisingly Damon had a look of concern on his face.

“Today didn’t exactly go how I’d planned.”

“You didn’t know he was afraid of ghosts?”

“Something like that.” Although, Kay knew she should have noticed that the first time she’d helped Tucker remove a spirit who really had been haunting a house. She could kick herself for being such a fool. Celia hadn’t exactly helped the matter either. But that too, while something she was prepared for, should have been a red flag to come up with another plan to spend time with Tucker.

“I’m sorry if I made things worse,” said Damon. “I didn’t mean to.”

Kay let out a sigh as she noticed a flaming red maple tree in the peak of its fall color. She stared at it as they drove by. “You didn’t. My plan wasn’t the best. Now I’m sure Tucker wants nothing to do with me. And he’s going to get his wish because I won’t be convincing any more spirits to haunt this town.”
