“I can handle tantrums.”

“I know you can, I’ve seen you do it. But she’s not being bratty, it’s—” Hudson snapped his mouth shut, seeming to realize he’d said too much already.

Jethro was curious for sure about what he meant but if he was lucky, he’d get to find out later. And if he wasn’t then it wasn’t of any consequence anyhow.

Hudson stared at the two of them for another minute and then shook his head. “For what it’s worth, I think she might like you too. I think if it would’ve been anyone else she recognized, she would’ve bolted. And besides me, I’ve never seen her be affectionate like that with anyone. Not even close.”

The idea warmed Jethro even as it nudged at some sadness for Sable. Clearly she was affectionate with Hudson and they seemed to have known each other for quite a while. But was there no one else? Not that Hudson would know about any relationship she had outside the club, but she wasn’t married, he’d never had reason to think she had a partner, and while the women from the charity she worked on would say hello, they never really talked to her. Not like they did with each other.

Maybe Sable was a poor little rich girl.

Whatever it was, he’d hold her until she woke up.
