Me.Colton Donavan

Unknown:nope. He’s happily married

I giggle as I type my next response.

Me:I don’t know anyone else

Unknown:officially uninvited

Me:was Daire Deville’s pride hurt?

Unknown:no comment

Me:see you tonight?

Unknown:it is a party for my mother

A few hours later, I’m ready to go and saying goodbye to Journee. Her parents are stopping by shortly. They’ve been coming by instead of staying with her all day. She asked the to dial it back, so she doesn’t cling to them being around. Journee says she’ll be fine and to tell Noelle to enjoy herself.

Noelle is my plus one tonight. We might be each other’s plus one. She received an invitation as well.

The car ride to the location is a quiet one until we pick up Noelle. I literally can’t shut up. She listens to me blather on about everything and nothing. It’s as if I didn’t see her two hours ago, she isn’t moving in with us, and she doesn’t know most of the crap I’m telling her already. The stunner in her signature color of red quietly excepts all my words. Tonight, I’m rocking a multicolor ensemble that has major green accents. My jewelry and purse are green as well.

One guess as to who I thought about all day. If Daire and his transfixing green eyes were the guess, then absolutely correct.

I hear raucous laughter as the car pulls up to the house, I fled a few short weeks ago. The inside is lit up. Navy blue and silver are everywhere. It’s a spectacle that only a Shaw could pull off in twenty-four hours. Hope told me Jeanine Shaw announced yesterday afternoon that they were having a party in her honor. From what she said, they scrambled but they pulled it off. It looks just as dazzling as Hope promised it would.

The front door is open, and a sheer curtain hangs from it. We walk inside and I get to take in Daire’s home. I look around the open living room and try to take it in but am immediately accosted by two little people. Hope’s children rush me.

They drag me around, showing off their uncle’s house and their favorite places within. I’m then passed on to their mother who introduces me to some people I don’t know. Graham and Ryder find me next. I’m introduced to Gemma, who is Daire’s manager. I also get to reconnect with two people I haven’t seen in years. Cynt, my high school friend, and Nee, Ryder’s other half, and I sit down on the deck, catching up for a good hour. Ryder’s brother is here. I watch the birthday woman talk to her daughter on one of the large screens. Daire’s voice can be heard but I don’t get to see him. Someone pulls him away. He seems to be as popular as his mother tonight. I’ve literally seen everyone else but just missed him. His house is too damn big. That’s another thing that’s strange. The number of rooms and the astronomical amount of space he has just to himself. I’ve even seen the man’s garage.

Yet, I haven’t seen him.

I feel it. The familiar tingle then his hand grazes mine. Just before our fingers lock together and I’m being pulled into the kitchen. The heart of the home and very few people are here. I am in love with everything here. This room is one of my favorites. The kitchen opens to the deck. There is a glass wall so whoever is in the room isn’t staring at a wall as they prepare the food. It’s beautiful.

“Hey, let me see ‘em.”

I smile at the familiar request before I face him.

“Hey, let me see yours.”

He smiles as he looks at me.

“I’ve been sending you texts all night. You haven’t answered one.”

“You have. I must’ve put on silent instead of vibrate.”

I look down to my purse, where my phone is, but he taps my chin.

“It doesn’t matter. They weren’t important. We’re here now.”

He's sitting there, looking at me the way I’ve always wanted him to look at me. It’s the greatest and worst feeling all at the same time because I have no right to enjoy it. I’m in the know and he’s not.

No time like the present.

I hear Noelle’s voice as those words play in my head. Steadying myself, I look up over at him.

“Do you remember that last night? The night ... well morning when we were here?” I ask him.
