“No, you’re not, you’re rebelling.”

“What? What does that mean?”

“It means your father just made me even more forbidden than I already was. And you’re pissed at your dad, and you want to show him you can do what you want.”

“That’s what you think this is? Is that how you see us? Is that how you see everything that’s happened between us?” Her eyes well up with tears and before I even have a chance to take it back one trickles down her cheek and she wipes it away. “Am I like all those other girls?”

“No Serena, of course not.” I press my hand to her cheek. It’s cool under my warm hand, and only now do I notice that her nose is red. I turn the heat on, hoping to warm her both inside and out, and she presses a kiss to my palm.

“You’re not the forbidden fruit. You’re just…a guy I like. A guy I like spending time with.” I slide my hand down to where hers are folded in her lap and pull her small hand into mine. “I’d seen you in passing from time to time, but the first time you talked to me…” she licks her lips and turns her head to mine, “I felt something. Something I hadn’t felt before. It’s all happening so much faster than I thought this could happen and it’s scary and exciting and I know my dad is going to throw a fit. Probably my mother too. God knows my sister will have a million opinions on the matter, but it doesn’t matter to me. It’s my life, not my parents or Skyler’s. I’m not asking for more than you’re willing to give, I swear. This isn’t me saying I want to be your girlfriend or anything…I just…I think you’re the person I’m supposed to take this step with.” She looks up at me. Her eyes are confident and willing, but I can see her nervousness as she prepares for my reaction. She shifts anxiously in her seat and her skirt rises higher, reminding me of just what’s underneath it.

“Serena Mitchell, my little Bambi.” I run my finger down her cheek, her neck, and down her shoulder. She shudders and I can sense the fire burning beneath her skin.

She wants it.

Hell, so do I.

“Does the offer still stand for me to come over later?”

“If you didn’t, I was going to throw you over my shoulder and drag you there myself,” I tell her before I press my lips to hers.

The rest of the day is uneventful. Preston stays away from my office, and Serena only walks by my open door a dozen or so times, swinging her hips as she walks by every time. Towards the end of the day, I’m staring at the door, drooling as I wait for another glimpse of her.

Bambi: I’m going to go home and grab my stuff… I assume I can stay over?

Me: Yes. Get your sweet ass to my place now. Drive carefully.

I’m leaving the office when I catch a glimpse of Preston’s open door. He usually leaves before I do, wanting to be home for dinner with Viv, but now I have someone waiting to have dinner with me too. Jana was hardly ever home when I got there. She was either out shopping or at dinner with friends, or God knows where. More times than not, I came home to an empty house. Griffin would be at a friend’s house or after school activities, and then as he got older, out with friends or other social functions. That was when I started staying later and later at the office. Coming home to a house where everyone was already asleep felt a lot less lonely.

Serena wants to be there. She wants to be around. I take a few steps towards Preston’s office before I shake my head, not wanting anything to ruin my mood before I see Serena.

I’ll talk to him tomorrow.

I pick up a bottle of wine on my way home and decide to stop in the florist next door that I used to frequent. I can’t even remember the last time I bought flowers.

“Good evening, sir!” a short, middle-aged blonde woman chirps from the counter. “What can I get for ya?”

I start to say my regular: twelve long-stemmed red roses when something else catches my eye. I move towards the source of my intrigue and run my finger over a purple rose. Each rose in the arrangement is perfectly bloomed, each petal flawless and full.

“It’s the perfect bouquet. I haven’t seen one quite like it in a while. Purple roses mean enchantment.” She continues. “The giver seeks to express that they’ve fallen in love…perhaps at first sight. There’s a deep magnetism between the giver and receiver, perhaps something so powerful and profound neither understands.”

I scratch my beard as I glance around the room at all the other flowers. None of them say Serena. None of them explain my feelings for her.

Am I falling for her?

Have I already fallen?

Have I fallen in love with her without even having sex with her?

Holy shit, if I’m feeling like this now I’m going to become obsessed the second I fuck her.

Am I ready for this obsession to infiltrate my life?

Am I ready for the end of my friendship with Preston?

The questions are flying at me a mile a minute and the only thing I can think to do is smile. “These. I’ll take them.” I point at them and hand her my credit card. “All of them.”

“All?”
