“I’m not—”

“Hungry, yes, so Valerie told me. But you need to eat something and so do I.” He gives me a pointed glare that says I shouldn’t argue anymore. I ignore it.

“Don’t you have an assistant that will go fetch that for you?”

“While yes, I do, sometimes I like to get out of the building. Fresh air and all that. Come on, we’ll go to this deli around the corner.”

I halt in my tracks, my brain remembering that I’d heard something about that particular place. “Olivia said she got food poisoning from there.” He stands at the entrance to my father’s office, his hand hovering on the handle before he drops it and turns to me, effectively blocking my exit.

“You’ve been talking to Olivia?” he asks. Maybe I shouldn’t have said that. But, I mean, why would that concern him? She is my father’s paralegal. Of course we’ve spoken. Maybe they really are dating?

Not your business, Serena.

“She just offered me some advice. I guess as apart of newbie orientation.” I shrug it off as if to insinuate that she hadn’t told me anything important. Like the fact that you’ve left a slew of broken hearts in your wake, despite the fact that you’re married.

“Really? What else did she tell you?”

“Ummm, just stuff about the fast copiers, and little things about the office atmosphere.” I’m close enough to him to smell his cologne. It’s spicy and woody and I wish I could rub up against him so that I could smell him on my skin for the rest of the day.

He eyes me, probably wondering if I’m keeping something from him. He narrows his eyes, letting me know that he doesn’t buy what I’m selling. Lawyers. They can spot a lie a mile away. “Uh-huh. Well, you know what they say, Serena.” He runs a hand through his dark-brown, wavy hair. “You can’t believe everything you hear.”
