“Are you?” I shake my head. Now isn’t the time to unleash all the issues I have with my father, especially with Skyler more than likely in the next room.

“You think…” My nostrils flare, as the tears flow down my cheeks more aggressively. “You have no faith in me. No faith to make my own decision. No faith in me as a future lawyer…”

“That’s not true, Serena! I just want to protect you.”

“I don’t need protection!” I scream, and despite the years of pent-up hurt I have built inside, it’s as if I can’t get the words out. “I don’t need protection from Landon.”

Landon’s hands stroke my back and I wonder if my dad is going to lose it again, but he just shakes his head. “I want you out of my house,” he says quietly. “I can’t believe you did this. To me, to my family, to Viv. I never dreamed we’d be having this conversation. Even with all your indiscretions…I thought you had more respect for me than that.” He rubs his forehead and backs out of the room. “Just get out, Landon.” He points at me. “And you stay here,” he says as he stomps out of the room.

The tears are flying fast down my cheeks the second he’s gone and turn to full on sobs. “I’m so sorry.” I hiccup. “I’m so embarrassed.”

“Shhh, don’t be sorry.” He presses a kiss to my forehead and then my lips that are already starting to swell from the tears.

He wipes my face, but new tears form just as quickly. “Please don’t hate me.”

“You know that’s not even possible. But I do think you should stay here.”

“What?” Is he telling me this is it? No, that’s impossible. He just insinuated that he wants me knocked up for the better part of my twenties.

“Stay here, you don’t want things to get worse.”

“What could be worse than us not being together right now. I want to be wherever you are.”

He smiles. “I love you,” he whispers. “Just give your dad a second to cool off.”

My lip wobbles and I sink my teeth into it to try and prevent more tears from falling, but it’s no use. “When can I see you?”

“You tell me, okay? The second you can.” He winces. “I need to do some damage control in case he really does go to the board.”

“You’re not going to be in trouble, are you? At work?” They wouldn’t fire him, right?

“You let me worry about that, alright?”

I nod and swallow to try and prevent the words from falling from my lips, but the anxiety bubbles to the surface. “This isn’t the end of you and me…is it?”

He cocks his head to the side and gives me a smile that doesn’t reach his eyes. “Serena, I’ve learned so much from you in the past three months. So much about myself and I wonder if that’s because you’re actually a part of me. A soul knows no age, Serena, and mine recognized something in you instantly. Before I even touched you, I was drawn to you so inexplicably. There could never be an end of us.” He kisses my forehead. “I’ll call you,” he tells me and then he’s gone.

I press a hand over my heart as I hear the door close and drop to my knees instantly, feeling my heart shatter into pieces spectacularly in response to his eerie words. Under normal circumstances, I would have swooned over them, but he hadn’t exactly answered my question, and that broke my heart.
