“Come here and give me a real kiss.” I let his hand drop and I press my lips to his gently. “Hey, why are you crying? I’m okay, see?”

I nod. “You just scared me. I thought…” The tears begin to flow down my cheeks and I put a hand over my eyes after sliding my glasses to the top of my head.

“I’m not going anywhere, baby. Never. How did you get here? I hope you didn’t drive. Did Skyler?”

“I didn’t drive. My dad brought me and Skyler both. They’re outside.”

“Your dad brought you?”

“Yeah, a lot has happened since you left.” I let my eyes drift down his body. “Clearly,” I whisper. “We talked and…he’ll come around.” I press my hands to his chest and rub it softly. “I’m so sorry.” I hiccup.

His hand rests over mine. “Hey, why are you sorry? Come on, give me a smile. You look so beautiful.” He raises his arm up slightly in an attempt to touch me before he winces and I know the panic is all over my face. “Don’t look at me like that, I’m okay. Just a little sore.”

“Well, stop moving around!”

He chuckles. “I was beginning to wonder how I was going to get you here. They told me they could only call my emergency contact.” He sighs and shuts his eyes briefly. “I can’t wait to be divorced.”

“Yeah, me either.”

He shoots me a cocky grin. “Eager to marry me, huh, Bambs?”

I feel my cheeks heat up and I press my hands to them to cool the skin. “That’s not what…I meant…I just…”

“It’s what I meant.” He reaches for my hand and brushes his lips over my knuckles. “I’m eager to wife you up.”

“I wouldn’t mind being married to you.” I smile. “You know, for all the babies you want.”

“I’m taking that as a verbally binding contract.” He winks. “You’re stuck with me now, Mitchell.”

The tears start to fall again at this informal proposal and the words fall from my lips. “Best news I’ve heard all day.”

I haven’t left Landon’s side since I arrived, and at some point, Aidan came to collect Skyler, and my dad had left as well, telling Landon that they would talk as soon as he was out. I’ve pulled the couch towards his bed and he frowns when I sit down. “Get your ass up here,” he says as he slides over. “I need to kiss on you some more.”

“No, I don’t want to hurt you. You can barely move your arms without wincing. I’m just going to stay here.”

He pouts and it’s the cutest thing ever. I’m about to give in to his want—that also happens to be my want—when his phone begins to ring. I grab it from where it’s charging on the table and hold it up. “It’s a Facetime from Griffin.”

“Wow, I’m shocked.”

“Have you talked to him?”

“Nope.”

“He just wants to make sure you’re okay, I’m sure. Jana did call my dad. They do care about you.”

“Give me the phone. He’s probably calling to yell at me and tell me I’m a shitty dad.”

“Landon…” I hand it to him and go to make my way out of the room to give them some privacy when I hear his voice. “Hold it.” I turn around to look at him and he shakes his head. “Stay. Please.”

I nod and take a seat on the couch away from the phone camera’s line of sight. “Hey, Griff.”

“Dad?”

“How’s it going, Son? How’s Chicago?” Landon asks, but I know his heart isn’t in it. Months of indifference and disrespect and hurtful comments and the past several hours have all culminated to this moment, and who knows what meds they have him on that would make him over this conversation already.

There’s silence on the other end. “Dad, I’m really sorry. I really…I mean, I know you think I’m just making this up, but I didn’t mean to slip up to mom about Serena. I might be a lot of things, but I’m not a snitch.” I watch as Landon cracks a small smile and it warms my heart that he loves Griffin so unconditionally.

He’s going to make the best father.
