“NO! And I’ve said that many times. But this is a baby that you what…tricked me into believing was mine? I met your parents, you humiliated my girlfriend and pushed her away from me. I wasn’t going to abandon you if this baby was mine, Alli, and if you would have just thought about this baby instead of your fucking self, you would have realized that Leighton would have loved this baby too. She’s not a bad person, Alli. She’s been in love with me for a really fucking long time. And I know you don’t care, but for you to do this… it’s unforgivable. If this test proves this baby isn’t mine…then I’m going to go as far as to say that we probably didn’t have sex that night. That you drugged me…” I put a hand up when she interjects. “Or maybe I did just get that drunk on my own, though I’m not convinced given that pieces of that night feel like they’ve been wiped from my memory…but I’m going to say that you went with it when we woke up naked that next morning. At the very least, you’re not even completely convinced that we had sex.”

“Everett…” She hiccups and wraps her arms around herself as a breeze whips through the air.

“I’ll see you at two,” I tell her before storming off towards my car.

I slam the door to Leighton’s house behind me so hard it shakes. Peyton and Skyler, who are sitting on the couch with their books strewn across them, jump nearly three feet. “Oh my God!” Peyton shrieks. “Why?!”

I ball my hands into fists and close my eyes. “Leighton.” The word leaves my lips like a prayer, and instantly I feel the tension leaving my body as if just her name has the power to calm me.

“She’s at campus! She’s studying at the library,” Peyton says.

“Without one of you guys?” It isn’t necessarily late, but I know studying for finals can take you way into the night, and I hate that she would have to get home by herself late at night.

“I think she’s in a study group,” Skyler adds.

“Don’t you have like a chip in her to track her movements or something?” Peyton quips and gives me a smirk.

I put a hand up. “I am really not in the mood.”

Peyton pulls a pencil from behind her ear and points at me. “Then you can exit the way you entered because you’re in my house, Cartwright.”

“Don’t start, you two. What’s wrong, Everett?” Skyler asks. “You’re shaking.”

“I…I need Leigh.”

“Okay, well just text her.”

“Do you know who she’s studying with?” I’m not sure where we’d landed on her little study date with Adam, but I hope to God that she isn’t studying with him.

For her sake.

My sake.

My fucking sanity.

Me: Hey, I’m at your house. Where are you? I need to talk to you.

Leighton: Library! What’s wrong?

Me: Who are you with?

Leighton: Study group for stats

Me: With Adam?

Leighton: Everett…

Me: Are you serious?

Leighton: He’s here, yes. But there’s a lot of us. Like ten.

Me: I don’t care. I told you how I felt about you being with him.

Leighton: I didn’t think you’d be upset if I wasn’t alone with him.

Me: Spending time with your ex-boyfriend in ANY fucking capacity, Leighton. You knew what the fuck I meant.

Leighton: Stop swearing at me! I’m sorry, okay? But I really don’t want to fail this exam. It’s worth like thirty percent of my grade. And he can’t exactly take it like he’s been doing my homework.
