“IT’S NOT LIKE WHAT?!” he screams. “You mean you weren’t just defiling my baby sister?” He pulls at his hair and groans. “Oh my God, I had to see that! And I said-- about…” He points at Ava as he recalls all of the foul things he said about her. She folds her arms.

“That’s right, you jerk. I am not a prostitute.” She stomps her foot, and if this were any other situation, I would think it was cute.

“What the fuck, Ava? Can’t you find a guy you haven’t known since you were born? How are you not smart enough not to get caught up in this asshole’s crosshairs?”

“That asshole is your oldest friend!”

“And as his oldest friend, I can attest to the fact that he treats women like shit!” he growls.

“Okay, first of all, you’re pissed at me, so don’t take this out on her,” I bark at him, not liking the tone he’s taking with Ava.

“You’re damn right I’m pissed at you, Walsh. How could you fucking do this to me? How could you take advantage of my sister?! MY SISTER! The most important person to me! She doesn’t know anyone here, and you took advantage of her being alone in a big city. I trusted you, Jackson. My parents trust you!” His face is turning red as he screams, and I think it’s only a matter of time before he takes a swing at me.

“It’s not like that, Tucker… It’s different with Ava.”

“Oh my God, here we go. Like it was different with all of the other women you’ve promised the sun and the moon and the stars to so you could get into their pants?” He looks at Ava and points at me. “What did he promise you? Because he’s full of shit. He will say whatever he can to get into your pants. God, didn’t dad warn you about guys like him?”

“Oh my God, enough!” she shrieks. “You call yourself his best friend; how can you say all of that about him?!”

“Because you’re my baby sister! And it’s the fucking truth! Do you think I want to see you get hurt?!”

As much as it hurts hearing my best friend say all of that about me, I can’t deny there’s some truth behind it. But it’s different with Ava.So very different.“I would never hurt Ava.Ever,” I interrupt. “Tucker…this isn’t some fling.”

“Bullshit!”

“Fuck you, Tucker, I LOVE her!” I scream.

I freeze, having never said the words out loud before, and I turn toward the other Remington in the room. Her eyes are wide, and the tears form in them instantly. “What?” Her teeth find her bottom lip. “You… love me?”

I swallow nervously, having to lay my heart out for the first time ever, not only in front of Ava but her brother as well. “Yes,” I whisper. “I love you, Ava.”

She takes a step closer to me as the tears slide down her cheeks when I feel a fist connecting hard with my cheek. I hear Ava scream as it knocks me a few steps back, and before I’m upright again I hear Ava yelling at her brother.

“Tucker, WHAT THE FUCK!?”

I rub my jaw, already feeling my lip swelling and the blood pooling in my mouth from the gash on my lip.

“You were like my brother, Jackson.”

I cringe hearing the anger as well as the sadness in his voice. “I still am…,” I trail off. My jaw isn’t made of glass; I know he’s pissed, and I’m more than willing to let the hit go as I’d probably do something similar, but something tells mehe’snot willing to let it go. “I get that you’re pissed but--”

“The fact you say you love her means this shit has been going on for longer than just now. So not only have you been fucking around with my baby sister, but you’ve been LYING to me about it. You say you’re in love? But you were too much of a pussy to tell me that?”

“Because we knew you’d react like this! We knew you’d overreact. Honestly though, I never in a million years expected you to lash out like this. Jesus, Tucker, this isn’t your life. It’smine. This has nothing to do with you!” She points at me. “Butthatis your best friend, though to be perfectly honest, you don’t deserve his friendship right now. He just said that helovesme. That doesn’t mean anything to you? What kind of friend are you? What kind ofbig brotherare you?”

He shakes his head before leaving the room without another look at Ava, knocking against my shoulder as he leaves. I hear the door slam, and Ava’s in my arms instantly. “Oh my God, let me see.” I feel her hand on my lip and then tracing my bruised jaw. I wince once as the skin is a bit sensitive. “Let me get you some ice.” She presses a light kiss to my jaw. “You should have hit him back.”

“Why? I deserved it.”

She grabs an ice pack from my freezer. “No, you didn’t.”

“If the tables were turned and this was Elle...”

She purses her lips together and presses the ice to my cheek. “Well, that’s stupid.” She sighs. “I’m sorry this happened.”

“Not as sorry as I am.” I can see the frown cross her face.

“I didn’t mean to wreck your friendship with Tucker.”
