I take a step towards his desk, fully prepared to sit on top of it and let him do just that despite my slight annoyance when my phone begins to ring. I look down and my eyes widen in shock with the name flashing across my screen.

Why is Drew calling?

Before I have a chance to tell myself that I should definitely let the phone call from my ex-boyfriend roll to voicemail and let Vince put his mouth on my cunt, I’m pressing the phone to my ear.“Hi.”

“Did you tell Charley to take away my plus one to my own fucking brother’s wedding? The wedding, myparents are paying for?” My ex’s aggressive voice rings through the phone making me feel like someone has just knocked the wind out of me. I never knew Drew Montgomery to raise his voice and definitely not at me. But hearing the venom shooting through the phone is enough to make me want to end this call.

Why did I answer this phone call?

Why did I think anything good would come from this?

Did I think he was calling to get me back?

“First of all, Will is paying for most of it, as you know, so you can fuck off about Daddy’s money. Secondly, no, I did not. Maybe Charley cares about my feelings just a bit more than your new girlfriend who probably won’t be around till the end of the month.”

He chuckles and I feel a flash of anger shooting through me at his response. “Bitterness doesn’t suit you, Lauren.”

I snort. “You’re being an asshole, and I don’t have time for it. I’m at work.”

“This is fucking ridiculous. This wedding isn’t about you.”

“It’s about you and your new flavor of the month? I’m sorry I could have sworn it was about my best friend and your brother, who pretty much hated you until a year ago.” The line goes silent. I know it was a low blow, and I’ll admit I feel a bit guilty, especially when I see the look Vince is giving me. He makes a gesture that I needed to hang up the phone and when I don’t respond he moves towards me.

After a few moments, Drew speaks again. “Alright then, I guess I’ll see you at the wedding, Lauren.”

The line goes dead before I can respond and I slide it down my face trying to blink away the tears building in my eyes at this awkward confrontation with my ex whom I’ll have to face in less than three weeks.

“Did you really have to answer that?” Vince asks as he gently pulls my phone from my hand like a parent removes something they perceive to be dangerous from a child.

“I…” I watch as he sets my phone on his desk, out of my reach.

“Thought he was calling to get you back? The guy’s a dick, Lauren.”

I frown. “You don’t even know what he said.”

“I have a guess based on what you saidandyou called him an asshole.”

“He is,” I murmur.

“Leaving you for some other chick and telling you via text? Yeah, I’ll agree with that.” He sits on the small love seat in the corner of his office and pulls me into his lap. “I’ve never seen someone rattle you. This is the second time I’ve seen him get under your skin.”

“He was my boyfriend, Vince. For almost a year. Of course, he knows how to rattle me.”

“Fair. But you’re better than that. Better than him.” His lips brush against my shoulder.

“Am I? I did plant the seed with Charley…I didn’t want to see him making out with his new girlfriend. It was a moment of weakness and Charley ran with it.”

He chuckles. “Sounds like your girl’s got your back.”

“She’s the best.” I smile as I recall how deep my friendship with Charley goes. She loves me through poor fashion choices and my terrible idea to get bangs. We shared an address for more than three years in college and managed to not kill each other.

She was there when my father got sick. When he got better…and then when he got sick again butdidn’tget better. She held my hand at the funeral and let me cry for two straight days while she all but forced food down my throat. Charley went above and beyond for me, always.

“You know what you need?” Vince asks, breaking my trip down memory lane.
