“Hmmm,” she says just as the elevator sings and she slides out onto my floor.

I follow her, my mind already memorizing her scent and the way her hips sway with each step.

“What’s your name, anyway?”

“You’ll find out soon enough, Maddox.” She giggles before slipping into my boss’s office and promptly shutting the door in my face.

The hell?

I hadn’t expected her to fall at my feet at my half assed attempt at flirting but I didn’t expect to be blown off either.

It’sin the late afternoon staff meeting when my boss introduces aLauren Michaelsto the team and I almost spit out my coffee.

“Wait…Michael is a woman?” I blurt out. That woman?Ten sets of eyes fall on me in response to my word vomit and I clear my throat in preparation of removing my foot from my mouth at my potentially chauvinistic comment. I watch as beautiful green eyes I’m seeing for the second time today widen slightly and then narrow in confusion.

“Michaels,” she corrects. “My first name is Lauren. Problem?” she snaps and I can see the fire in her eyes directed only at me.

“No…I just didn’t know.” I shrug, shooting her a cocky grin.

The rest of the meeting is uneventful, though I caught her staring at me every once in a while.Glaring is more like it.

By the end of the meeting, I’m convinced that I’m not Lauren Michaels’ favorite person.

Whether or not she’s interested in me is a different story.

The following day

“Laura,” I call after her as I spy her walking down the hall. She’s wearing pants today, ones that frame her hips and complement her ass in a way that makes me wonder if they’re custom made. I fall into step with her but she stops abruptly and stares at me.

“You know it’s Lauren.”

“Well, it’s not like you introduced yourself.” I lean against the wall and cross my arms.

“Jack introduced me to the entire team.” She huffs and I smile in response to her feistiness. She’s wearing a burgundy lipstick that accentuates her full lips especially when she purses them at me and making me wonder what it would be like to sink my teeth into them.

“Listen, if you’re going on a coffee run, can you let me know?”

“Excuse me?” Rage flashes in her eyes and I smile inwardly at the ability to push her buttons.

“I like it black,” I tell her before I turn around and start down the hallway.

“Are you serious?!” she calls after me, but I ignore her as I head back into my office.

A week goesby and our banter only intensifies.

Just in the wrong direction.

What I was hoping to become playful flirting, somehow takes a turn and becomes an endless back and forth that eventually leads to insults.

I get under her skin and God knows she gets under mine.

I’m hoping that one of these arguments will spark something between us, but upon further investigating, and by that, I mean I observe her shoot down practically every single guy in the office; I learn she has a boyfriend. Some guy from Atlanta she’d been seeing for a hot minute.

Who starts seeing someone right before they move?
