“Mum, I–”

“It’s okay, Oli. Being in the car…your brothers and I, we didn’t know–”

The door opens, and I’m finally saved by a couple of nurses.

“How are you doing, Oliver? Are you ready for this?” They busy themselves checking my charts, pulling things out of cupboards, and checking my pulse and other vitals.

“As ready as I’ll ever be,” I mutter, turning my head away from my Mum.

As I lean back against Hannah’s bed two weeks post-op, I reach up and adjust the sling that’s digging into my shoulder. I close my eyes, taking a couple of deep breaths to clear the shiny spots away.

“You okay?” Hannah asks. Glancing over, her emerald orbs sparkle up at me.I could get lost in those eyes forever.

I wrap my good arm around her, bringing her in closer so I can kiss her, running my tongue along her bottom lip.

“Mmhmm,” I mumble against her mouth. “I’m good.”

“Eww! Get a room, you two,” Brad complains, standing in the open door of Hannah’s bedroom. We’re abiding by her parents’ new rule since we started dating.

“We areinmy room, doofus.” She gestures around where we sit on the floor, her laptop balanced on my lap as I read over her latest article for the school magazine. Hannah throws her stuffed teddy at her little brother. He laughs as he catches it and tosses it back at her.

“Hey Oli?” Brad ignores Hannah rolling her eyes at him. “I just got the new NBA game on the PS5. Wanna come try it out with me?”

“Sure Bud,” I answer, spotting my excuse to raid the Robinson’s medicine cabinet before the pounding in my head gets any worse. “Just let me finish reading this. Go get it set up.”

Brad grins as he runs off to the living room. Hannah leans over, running kisses along my jaw. “Are you sure you want to go play with my little brother?”

I grin as her lips met mine again. “Stop distracting me,” I murmur. “I haven’t hung out with Brad in ages.” I laugh as she pouts and add, “Plus, I’m hanging to play the new NBA game.”

“Five more minutes?” She kisses me in between each word, batting her eyes at me.

I place her laptop on the floor and pull her onto my lap. “Five more minutes,” I agree, pressing my lips against hers.God, I can’t get enough of her.

I duck into the bathroom across the hall from Hannah’s bedroom ten minutes later. I close the door before opening up the cupboards and the drawers trying to find something to kill the headache coming on. I grab the Panadol, dropping two tablets into my hand. Running the tap, I bend down and guzzle the cool liquid, swallowing the painkillers. I squeeze my eyes shut, splashing cold water on my face. I sit down on the edge of the bath, massaging my temples and focussing on my breathing. I lean forward to rest my forehead in my palms. The dark spots eventually clear, and I make my way down to the living room where Brad is waiting for me.

Hannah is sitting at her desk working through her psychology homework when I return to her bedroom an hour later. I lean over her, resting my flushed cheek against hers.

“How was the game?” she asks, closing her eyes as she leans back against my chest.

“I totally schooled your brother.” Grinning, I nuzzle her neck. “Finished yet?”

She laughs and it sends tingles through my body. “Nope.”

“Are you sure?”

Spinning her chair around so she’s facing me, I tease my lips against hers. She sighs, giving in to me. Wrapping her arms gently around my neck she pulls me closer. I grin against her lips. I still can’t believe she feels the same way about me as I do about her.

Reluctant and breathless she eventually pulls away, resting her head on my chest.

“As much as I love making out with you,” she says, running her finger along my bottom lip, “I need to get my homework done or Mum and Dad won’t let you back in this house.”

“I don’t know about that,” I joke, cocking my head toward her with a cheeky grin. “They love me more than you.”

“Smartarse!” She swats me and I take a step back laughing.
