Chapter Fifteen

Jake couldn’t believe his bad luck earlier when he saw Madeline Chu in the dining room, but even he never imagined the woman would go as far as climbing up to his balcony. What kind of a nutcase would scale the side of a cruising ship and take those chances of falling overboard?

Suddenly, he understood. It certainly wasn’t infatuation that drove her. Nor was an ordinary person able to manage the calisthenics it must have taken for her to be able to maneuver her way to his open balcony.

Only a trained individual could manage what she’d done. And now he could hear her as she approached his bed. If he hadn’t lived on the streets for so many years, accustomed to never being fully asleep, always aware of anyone in the vicinity, he might never have known she was even there.

He waited until she came close to the side of the bed and then he made his move. Swiveling so fast, he caught her unprepared, he had her under him, completely overpowered before she could do whatever it was she’d come for.

“What are you doing in my suite, Miss Chu? I don’t recall inviting you. And what’s that needle for? It looks threatening, don’t you think?”

Waiting for her to answer, he never expected her physical strength or her next play. Flying across the room, only to hit the wall and knock over the cat’s drawer, she was on him before he could right himself.

Though he fought her off, his weight an advantage, her agility made it impossible to pin her down. Once he thought he had her, she pulled another of those fancy martial arts moves and was free yet again.

Not being a man who ever hit a female, he began to think it would be his only chance to stop the fight and come out a winner.

This crazy bitch was determined to stick him with the vicious needle she wielded so dangerously, and he was just as determined not to give her any openings.

The moment he held his arm to bring it down in a backhand, she swirled to the floor, circled and came at him with a move that flipped him on his back. He was laying close enough for her to finish what she came in to do.

If kitty hadn’t taken it into her mind to get pissy about all the confusion and showed her displeasure by landing on Madelaine’s face with her claws open and digging, he’d have lost the battle for sure. He couldn’t be certain which female’s snarl was louder.

Before he recovered lost ground, Carlos, his cabin steward, appeared and forcibly removed Madelaine, overpowering her after the cat fled under the bed.

Jake scrambled to his feet, prepared to step in. The ensuing battle was two skilled fighters showing moves he didn’t even know existed. But Maddie fought to hurt, and Carlos fought to overpower. There was no real contest.

Maddie blocked Carlos’s arm, drove her open palm into his nose and her fist into Carlos’s solar plexus. Caught unprepared, blood gushing, he grabbed his sternum and went down, gasping for breath.

Before Jake could step in and stop her escape, she fled from his room, leaving behind a smashed-up cabin and a wounded room steward with a needle protruding from his arm.
