Chapter Thirty-three

Rylee had never felt so happy. Or at least not as a woman. There were times as a child before “the incident” when she knew life had shone brightly. There had been laughter, pleasure and golden days.

But this was the first time she’d even come close to feeling that glow again. Having Jake’s arms holding her close, hearing his heartbeats pounding above the music. Or maybe she just felt them because their bodies were melded, and she sensed how much that affected him.

The soft blue lighting from the ultra-modern bar soothed, while the disco-like appearance forming the background to the players on stage added atmosphere to their ‘70’s style of music. The ladybird, one of their lead singers, had the perfect voice reminiscent of earlier bands.

Unlike other men she’d danced with, Jake didn’t force his hardness forward and mash himself against her. It was happening, they were both aware of his growing desire, but she’d been the one to move in close.

Enjoying the power, she became filled with a joyfulness missing for so long. The fear was absent, only anticipation remained.

They glided together around the dance floor, their steps matching perfectly. The smooth silkiness of his pale green shirt provided a soft place for her cheek as she lay her head against his chest.

It was the last few bars of the music when she saw the group gathered in the doorway. All her pleasure dwindled, replaced with the absolute knowledge that her reason for being here was to protect Jake Andrews.

And these were the men who threatened him.

People she’d kill before allowing any one of them to hurt one hair on his head.

And how would that make the chauvinistic street champion feel?

Fu-uck!!
