Jake’s shocked reaction didn’t bode well for her evasion with such a weak explanation, so she figured to take his mind off the incident.

Suddenly, putting weight on her injury, she declared, “I don’t believe it. The pain is gone. Completely.” She tapped her foot a few times to the still-playing music. “I guess I didn’t twist my ankle as badly as I first thought.” She waved over the approaching waiter. “Please cancel the wheelchair. I seem to be fine now, it must have just been a momentary injury, you know one that hurts like the devil for a few seconds but isn’t permanent. Thank you for your kind assistance.”

Jake, still hovering, asked, “Are you sure, Rylee. It’s probably better if you have it x-rayed to be certain nothing is broken.”

“I can always do that if it swells or the pain returns. If you take me straight to my room, I’ll put it up.”

Another waiter approached with a bag of ice wrapped in a towel. “I brought this for your ankle. You can take it with you just in case it’s needed.”

“How kind. Jake, aren’t these folks wonderful?” Suspicion appeared in his expression. From the short time he knew her, he must realize her personality would not normally gush, but he watched and followed her lead. “Yes, everyone has been very helpful. We appreciate your assistance tonight.”

Glowing, prideful, Rylee watched as each of the four people there assured them it was their pleasure. They’d done their jobs, and no one had even suspected they’d been scammed.

No one but Jake.
