“Si. Lo siento! Pero, tengo hambre.” His big brown eyes stared her down. The kid was hungry.

“Si, pero, prometiste.” She had enough Spanish to know what he was saying. The fact that he’d reverted to speaking his language revealed his being caught had screwed with his conscience. Good! She needed him safe until she could deliver him to his mother – no more incidents, no more running away.

Jake followed the conversation and appreciated the influence Rylee had on Miguel. The kid’s dislike for being caught was totally because he’d let her down. It spoke well for his code of ethics, his upbringing and his concern for others.

He’d proved that before by being the son who went to such great lengths for his mother, his family. But Jake sensed Rylee mattered a lot, and Miguel hated scaring her or making her angry.

Seeing the boy filled with remorse, Jake intervened, “So, that’s settled. You’re a monster for breaking rules. For punishment, you’ll have to share this baby,” Jake snatched the box from Miguel, waved it in front of the other two and headed for a table.

Rylee picking up on his opening, added, “And I get first dibs.”
