“Those are the orders, Jake. We have eyes on her. If anything happens that looks bad, we’ll step in. Otherwise, we back off and follow orders.”

“Not a chance, bud. I’m not letting them keep her tied up like a mummy for hours. She’s in pain, she’s wounded.”

Jake heard a voice he hadn’t from this man until now. It was full of authority and meant business. “You either back off now with this bullshit talk, or I’ll arrest you and throw you in the jail with Madeleine. No fucking way you’re going to get my partner killed because you’re being lovestruck stupid.”

Jake stopped. He could feel every screaming, panic-stricken nerve going ballistic. He knew by the tone in Carlos’ voice that Rylee mattered to him. No one could dispute the evidence. And this pro was insisting on this course of inaction.

“Why? I don’t understand.”

“Look at the screen. What do you see?”

He looked at the whole picture rather than just at Rylee. “There’s three of them and only two of us.”

“Look closer.”

Jake scanned every portion of the room that was in view and finally ended up examining the three men. The sentinel at the door stood at attention, his neck swollen. When he turned to glare at Rylee, a huge lump marred his forehead.

The two at the table, a guard and Hakim, looked to be making plans, they had a map spread between them. Jake looked closer at Hakim and saw what Carlos had already noticed. The gun. The one Hakim held slack on his knee yet aimed toward Rylee.

There was no way they’d get to her before that son of a bitch pulled the trigger.
