“Have you heard any word from my sister? She’s in trouble. I know it.”

Nonplussed by the instant change in her, the cold wave covering her earlier warmth, he perched on the side of his desk and controlled his earlier impulses by holding his hands tightly together on his knee.

“I can’t speak about this, Miss James—”

Interrupting, she demanded, “Oh, give up with the informality already. We’ve spoken numerous times on the phone, and now we’ve met in person. Call me Mari and tell me the truth.”

“There’s nothing I can tell you. And no doubt, Rylee would not be impressed that you’re here demanding information that you know we can’t release.”

“God, you sound just like her. And I’ll tell you what I’ve said to her on more occasions than I could count. The hell with your dumb rules. I could care less about FBI policy. I only have one person in my life that matters, who I love, and you’d better take good care of her, or I’ll turn into your worst nightmare, Mr. Harrison.”

“Ahhh… Agent Harrison.”

She stepped forward, into his space, her body so close his knees began to shake. The force of her personality jarred the hell out of his calm. She looked him square in the eye and uttered words that continued to ring in his head for hours.

“Rylee is special, and she’s mine. You understand?”

“Uh huh. Yes, ma’am, sure do. Clear as a whistle.”

Her eyes softened. They stared into each other’s hearts for as brief a time as it took for them to acknowledge their attraction and accept there was no turning back. They’d found each other.

The door closed softly behind her before he revisited the real world and returned to his body.

What the hell just happened? Sucker-punched by a blonde-haired beauty, he had no options but to accept his plight. She’d just ruined him for any other woman.
