Chapter Fifty

Rylee came back to earth a changed woman. After being loved by a man like Jake, who’d spoiled her for anyone else, she couldn’t shy away from the reality of knowing he was her person.

Relaxing in a sublime dreamlike state, she suddenly remembered what they still had to do that day and unexpected sadness reared its ugly head.

“Hey, baby, as much as I hate getting out of this bed anytime in the next forty-eight hours, we have a chore.” Interrupted by Jake’s voice cutting into her painful thoughts, she felt him reach over and slide his hand over to grip hers, seemingly aware of her pain. Did he know her heart so well already, understand she was suffering from the thought of saying goodbye to her young friend?

Rylee fought against the blues that attacked. But abnormal pain was tearing at her – ridiculous tears clogging her throat, even as she forced them away with pure grit and determination. Somehow, she’d weakened, and not only had Jake snuck into her heart, but the boy had blasted through the steel walls also.

At this moment, she’d give anything to be the hard-hearted woman who didn’t let any emotion invade or take possession.

Now she had to leave the kid. Say goodbye. Not knowing if he was happy or in trouble. Never seeing him or keeping him safe.God, how do parents deal with this?

“Right.” She hardened her heart. “Let’s get it done.” Forcing herself out of his arms, she slammed into the bathroom, ignoring her trembling hands and weepy instincts.
