Chapter Fifty-eight

As Jake left the bathroom, he sensed someone behind him in the small hallway. At first, he didn’t clue in when Eve approached, her blue dress clinging to her frame.

“Jake Andrews? My associate has a gun aimed at your lady friend, and he will shoot her if you don’t do as I say.” The lady pointed to an earpiece in her ear.

Jake peered out into the restaurant and saw the smile aimed his way from a man whose hand was under the table holding a black item he had no doubt was a weapon. And it was pointed at Rylee.

Her back was to him, but he could see she was talking on her phone and knew her attention was elsewhere. He glanced around, hoping to catch Carl’s attention, but no such luck. He must be in the kitchen.Damn! Just my luck. Get the hell out of the place and keep Rylee from noticing.

“Fine. I’ll do whatever you say. But let’s get out of here now so your friend’s fingers don’t get twitchy.”

“Miss James will be fine as long as you follow instructions. Take me to your cabin. There, you’ll set up your laptop so I can download the files. That’s all we ask. Then we’ll leave you to go about your business.”

As they approached his cabin, Jake asked, “How do you intend to get away with this? I can call security, have you arrested.”

“Who the fuck cares? The data will be gone to our employers, and it’ll be my word against yours. A torn dress, some bruises, which I can show as evidence of attempted rape – who do you think they’ll believe?”

“And I felt sorry for you having to put up with that bum slapping you around.”

“Honey, for the money that bum is paying me to take his bullshit and play his games, I’m more than willing to go along. Enough, open the door and let’s get this over with. Larry is now sitting across from your honey and stopping her from following.” Suddenly the silk in her voice changed to steel. “Get the fucking laptop and let’s get this over with now.” She stood by the door and a gun suddenly appeared from a holster strapped to her thigh. “Just do it or so help me God…”

Jake went to the safe, retrieved the laptop and opened it with his password.

“Where’s the drive you want me to use?”

“Just let me see which files you’ve set up and keep in mind that I know exactly what file sizes would be used for your app, buddy. So, don’t play any games.”

“They’re here in this folder, the ones named Operations 1-10.”

“Good. Now go and sit in that chair and let me work.” Eve pulled the laptop close, and her fingers flew over the keys. In no time, she’d surveyed the files he’d pointed out, added an address, attached them and pushed send.

Meanwhile, Jake filtered through his choices. If he tried to overthrow Eve, she would send a message to Larry and that would put Rylee in danger.

He knew there were surveillance cameras in his suite, but neither Rylee nor Carl would be paying any attention to their monitors at the moment.

And Carl – he might realize there was a problem and come looking for Jake, but that could be dangerous. He glanced to see what Eve was doing now.

He caught her rifling inside the top of her dress, the bulge of her tits close to breaking free from their boundaries. She came up with a memory stick, which she inserted and loaded the laptop files to as backup. Then she replaced it, sagging with relief.

Her next words, obviously meant for Larry, left Jake feeling hopeful. “It’s done, baby. All clear.” Until she winced, a fearful expression replacing her earlier confidence.

Jake sensed that her nerves were beginning to fray, something must be going on with Larry, because she didn’t have the same composure she’d started out with.

“What’s wrong, Eve? Is something happening in the restaurant?”

A quick jerk of her head in a negative manner and Eve’s grin turned evil. “Nothing Larry can’t handle. There’s one more thing we need from you.” She put the gun back in her holster and approached, her fist rising, and she punched him in the stomach.

He saw it coming, but his reflexes didn’t react in time. His guard was down. He went to grab her arms to stop her from swinging the second time, and she head butted his chin. A pounding force that left him gasping, swaying, not thinking clearly.

Forced to add pressure on her arms to keep her mouth from taking the bite he saw coming, he flung her away, and she hit her head on the side of the bureau, blood pouring from a break in her skin. Totally nonplussed, he went to help her up and that’s when she tore the front of her dress, rubbed her face against him and made sure the blood leaked onto his shirt, his cheek and wherever she could manage to spread it.

Still not knowing what the hell the crazy chick was up to; Jake tried to overcome her wild punches and imprison her so she could calm down. Finally, it seemed to work. Her voice ragged, breathing hard, she stuttered, “Let me go.”

“Calm down and I will.”

“I’m calm. Let me go.”

“Okay, here, let me help you. You’re hurt. You’re bleeding.”

“Just get away from me.” Her voice rose to a scream. “Go. Leave me alone.”

“Yeah, Jake, leave the lady alone.” Carl stepped into the room, his gun ready and his voice mean. “She’s finished playing her little games. There’s a cell waiting for her where her man Larry needs her. Seems he’s not feeling too good right now.”

Jake’s nerves twisted; his fear revived. Carl was angry, barely holding it together. “Carl is Rylee okay?” How could his voice be so weak when huge waves of anger and fear were striking his insides, taking him to the breaking point?

“She’s fine, but her sister isn’t. You’d better go to her. She’s still at the restaurant.”
