Chapter Fifty

Later the next night, Sam had picked up Maureen at the airport. She now held her babies close, both nestled in her arms on her lap and loving the attention. Sam felt such a relief to see them together that he didn’t want to disrupt their reunion, but he had little time and still so much to process.

“Sis, I have to tell you a few things. Yanis had a lawyer look into Manos’s affairs, and it seems that he owned the ranch outright and a number of other investments. Since you’re the mother of his children, they want to know how you intend to handle his estate.”

“It’s all money from his ahh… murky business dealings, and we want no part of it. Let them set up a fund to help the poor hostages whose lives he’s disrupted because of his crimes. Maybe start a trust for Alexandro’s education. But I want nothing to do with it.”

She couldn’t have made it more plain how she felt. She turned to Sophia, “I can’t thank you enough for being so kind to Jack and Casey. They’ve told me how excited they were about going to the circus with you. I think it gave them something to look forward to.”

Sophia moved in on the trio on the couch and knelt in front so she would be even with the kids. “You know how we were going to go to the circus in Marmaris?”

Both kids nodded and both looked sad because of their lost treat.

“Well… I have a surprise for you. There is that exact circus just outside of Washington, and when we’re home, we can have our day together. Do you still want me to take you?”

The kids leapt forward, their arms reaching for her, “Yes, please. Can we go?” Jack turned to Maureen and then his head swiveled to glare at Sophia, “My mom wants to come with us. She can, right?”

“Of course, your mother can come.” Sophia caught Maureen’s eye and got the tearful nod of agreement. “It’s all settled. In three days, we’ll be there and get into as much mischief as possible.”

Casey piped up and pointing to a smiling Sam, she insisted, “Uncle Sam has to be with us. We want him to be there too. Can he, Mommy?”

Sam winked at Sophia, loving the special way her mouth curled in the shy, side grin and whisked the tiny girl from her mother’s arms to throw her high into air. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world, button. Escorting all my beautiful girls to a circus where they sell cotton candy and corn dogs. Oh yeah! Count me in.”
