Chapter Seven

Once Ruby arrived at the small house she loved because it was the first place she ever owned, she headed into the kitchen and took out the toaster.

Feeling starved and wanting something in her tummy that wouldn’t resurface, she decided that scrambling an egg and toasting some bread might do the trick.

Once she’d eaten as much as she trusted would stay down, she decided to clear away her dishes and start the half-filled dishwasher.

Working away with her radio playing, she swung around the room in her usual cheery dance steps and didn’t hear the dog next door barking until the song came to an end.

Swinging away from the disordered large island she loved to work at, she went to check outside the French doors. Sometimes Blossom, the golden retriever, barked at the cat from the neighbor’s house.

Nope, there was no feline slinking along the fence. She turned to re-enter her house and felt arms holding her in a firm grip while another person tried to place something over her face.

Reeling and scared shitless yet being trained to deal with these types of scenarios, she kicked back and connected with a knee. She heard the grunt of pain and hauled off to do the same thing again. Before she could, her attacker was ripped from her, and a battle ensued.

Someone else had arrived and had taken over. Thank God, she was free… though on her knees. Scrambling to her feet, she heard footsteps running around her house to the front, and she started after them. Before she could catch up with the runner, another person brutally flung her aside and fled in the opposite direction.

She saw her savior start after him and then stop when he realized she was down.

Crouching next to her, his voice gentle, Agent Storm growled with fury. “Are you okay, honey? Did those bastards hurt you?”

Unable to catch her breath, she wheezed while trying to reply. Before she could get the words out, he had her in his arms and was running with her to his car. “Oh, oh, you’re bleeding. Hold on, baby. We’ll get you to the hospital. Don’t try to speak.”

Words gathered, words of recrimination for him being so bossy. They streamed in her mind, but the only thing that came out of her mouth was her scrambled eggs and toast.
