Oh, God. Don’t let it stop.

But it did. With Kurt moving her aside, yanking open the door, and striding out the back of the restaurant.

It took moments before she could get her legs to work properly. Following, she arrived in time to watch the two men leaving the restaurant. Suddenly, Kurt approached them, showed his badge, and then was thrust away.

She ran to join him and watched as he wrestled her stalker to the ground. The other man had bolted. Seeing that Kurt had his hands full, she leapt over the hood of the car blocking her path and took off running to stop the other culprit fleeing the scene.

Dodging a woman pushing a baby carriage and three teens who felt they owned the sidewalk, she caught up with the man as he tried to unlock the door to his car.

“Hey, I want to ask you some questions.”

“Leave me alone.”

“Why are you and your friend following me?”

“I’m not. Go away.”

Ruby tried stepping in his way to block him from his vehicle. “Please, just give me a minute.”

Ignoring her, he continued to open the door only to have it kicked shut as Kurt joined the conversation. “The lady asked you a question.”

Sensing he wasn’t leaving without giving an answer, he looked down the block to see where his friend was cuffed to a parking meter and sagged. “Why did you attack us?” Playing offense, he aimed his question at Kurt.

“In this country, when an FBI agent shows you his badge and intends to ask a question, you don’t push him and run away. We have laws against that kind of behavior. Now talk. Why are you following her?”

“I’m not. We were just having lunch.”

“Hand me your wallet.” Kurt waited. The small-framed fellow slowly took it from his suit jacket and handed it over. Kurt perused the information and gave it back. “So, Lian Lin, who do you work for?”

His lips firmly closed, the Chinese man looked down and refused to speak.

Kurt’s next words were official. “Don’t leave Dallas. I have a feeling I’ll want to ask you more questions before too long.”

Lian looked up then, his face haughty with pride. “My plans are to stay for some time. Other than that, I have nothing more to say.”
