Jill looked stunned. “So, you’re saying that it’s an immaculate conception? You? A girl who only goes to church when I beg or-or offer a bribe. Honey—”
“Don’t say it.”
“You don’t know what I was going to say?”
“Whatever it is, don’t say it.”
“Okay. I won’t. Just one thing. Who’s the father?”
Frustration erupted. “See… you haven’t been listening. I have no fucking idea.”
“Hey.” Her mother put her fingers over Ruby’s lips and added, “No swearing around the kid. They can hear even when they’re in the womb.” Jill reached out to tentatively touch her daughter’s slightly protruding stomach. Her eyes widened. And her voice filled with wonder. In seconds, she murmured in amazement, “Are you sure?”
“Christ, Mom. That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you. I don’t know how I can be pregnant when I never did the deed. I mean, if I’d done the crime I’d do the time, but like this… I’m-I’m… Oh, God, I don’t know what I am.”
“You’re Ruby Allen, my pregnant daughter and we’ll get through this together. In the meantime, tell me what the doctor had to say.”
“You mean after he did an ultra-sound when I wouldn’t believe his diagnosis to begin with.”
“Okay. What did he say then?”
“I’m in the beginning of the second trimester and too far gone to have an abortion.”
“Did you ask for one?” Her mom’s eyes narrowed threateningly.
“I was too shocked to think straight. But no, I wouldn’t. Don’t look at me like that. Didn’t you hear me? I’ve been violated. I have no idea about this baby’s conception. It’s ridiculous that I can be in this condition at all.”
“Okay, calm down. Were you ever too drunk to know how the evening ended? I mean… I know you don’t drink often or much but was there a night three months ago when you might have lowered your limits?”
“See… I’ve been searching my memory for anything like that, and I can honestly say, three months ago, my biggest excitement was a weekend at the spa with Caro.”
