“Don’t be silly. Just listen. She had a knife and was threatening the other lady. The situation had to be defused. She’d lost her shit for a few minutes, and I don’t blame her. Poor woman found out her partner had cleaned out their bank account, and she was forced to leave a cartful of groceries behind instead of bringing them home with her three kids. Put her in a rage. She reacted when another woman’s cart accidentally got loose and almost decked her kid with asthma. It’s been settled. All’s well.”

“The cops must have come. Obviously, someone called 911.”

“Yeah. It’s been handled. We’re good. I’m good. Quit nagging.”

He looked at her and saw her shiny eyes. “What?” He wrapped his arm around her back and snuggled her in close. Her head rested on his chest, and he massaged her shoulder gently. “Tell me.”

“I thought I’d lost the kid.”

“I’m sorry. That must have been hard.”

“It shouldn’t be. Until recently, I had no idea I was pregnant. Still have no idea how it happened.”

Kurt’s voice teased. “Ahh! The birds and bees. I can explain that if you need me to.”

She chuckled; her lips so close to his chest that he felt the heated moisture through his cotton jean shirt.

“I know how babies are made you dolt. I just don’t know how mine came to be.” She looked up in time to see his eyebrow raised in disbelief. “It’s true. I have no idea when I got pregnant. One day, I went to the doctor about my stomach reacting to everything I ate and the next thing I heard were the words that have changed my whole world… you’re pregnant.”

Kurt’s mind tumbled through all kinds of scenarios until he hit on the one that couldn’t be wrong. “Honey, when you have sex with my gender, it often brings this result.”

“See… the trouble is… I haven’t had sex or been with a man in any way in over a year.”

Stunned speechless, Kurt whistled.
