Finally, he reached his vehicle, opened the door, and flung himself inside. There he lowered his head to his hands clutching the steering wheel. His body’s shaking ramped up… worse now that he could finally release the fear he’d kept hidden. Tears filtered through his fingers, and he swallowed the sobs.

He hadn’t broken down when he’d been a boy. Not this way. Not like every muscle and bone in his body had lost their ability to keep him from folding into himself, becoming an empty, thin shell.

Memories of that other fire surfaced… the night he’d become a man too young. The night when all his dreams had turned to ashes and only Molly had understood. The night she hadn’t left his side because she’d understood what they’d both lost.

Sighing deeply, he wiped the tears away and let the pain wash over him like he’d never been able to do before. Strangely, the image of his parents together laughing over some dumb thing he’d said appeared in his memory.

With his eyes closed, he saw clearly how his mother had often wrapped him in her arms while his dad would come and hug them both tightly in what they had termed a group hug. He remembered that now. How they’d carried on the tradition until the day they died. How it had made him feel – so safe and warm and incredibly loved.

In his imagination, he knew that at that very moment, he was again experiencing that much-needed group hug. Softness, love, and incredible gentleness surrounded him, and peace came with it.

As if from a different dimension, they were telling him something he needed to remember. And as much as he tried to figure out their message, other than he had been incredibly loved, it wasn’t quite coming through.

Until the words burst into his memory. He heard his mother’s voice before one of their many trips. “We’ll always be with you, Kurt, whether in person or not.” Then she’d touched his heart. “We’re here.”
