Chapter Fifty-two

It was the dead of night when she couldn’t sleep and rose quietly so as not to wake up Kurt. She walked around the house, checked the charmingly furnished baby’s room for the tenth time, and looked around her incredibly clean house.

For some strange reason, that day she’d been filled with ambition to make sure every area was sparkling and now she beamed from her results. As she made her way into the kitchen to fix herself a ginger tea, she felt something pop, and she looked down to see a puddle increasing on the floor.

Knowing exactly what she needed to do, mopping up the mess first, she quietly went into the bedroom and gathered her clothes, thinking there’d be time before she needed to make a fuss.

Slipping into the bathroom, she ran a bath, added her special salts, and lit her candle, planning to sink into the warm depths to soothe her body before the baby got too rambunctious.

No sooner did she lower herself into the warm depths than a huge pain struck her lower back, and she caught her breath. Okay. It’s okay. I knew it would be like this. Thinking she’d have a number of minutes before the next incident, she tried to relax back into the warmth, but another pain rippled across her tummy and wouldn’t let up. My God. This isn’t what they said to expect in prenatal class.

Breathing her way through the discomfort, she forced her body to relax. With dripping fingers, she clutched the phone she kept close to see the time. Many thoughts crossed her mind, the most important one being that maybe she should get dressed and be ready.

Before she could begin to organize herself to get out of the tub, the next pain hit, and not even five minutes had passed. That did it.

“Kurt!” Her voice didn’t seem quite loud enough and so she yelled just a little. “Hurry, baby. I need you.” When he didn’t instantly appear, she upped the tone to a scream. “Kurt-t-t!!”

The noise of his falling and the cuss words he used as he ran to her side made her giggle idiotically. And then another pain hit.
