Chapter Fifty-five

Once they had settled down and Yu Yan promised she would return the next day, Kurt held the baby while Ruby, exhausted and glowing, made room next to her on the bed.

“I was afraid your cop genes would kick in and you would make a fuss about arresting Yu Yan. I couldn’t let that happen. Not after she brought Wei back to me.”

He grinned, feeling lighthearted and happier than he’d been since the nightmare had begun. “I couldn’t tell you this before, but I’d felt responsible for the baby going missing. After all, I’d promised there was nothing to worry about. I’d been so sure the worst had passed, and the case closed.”

“Don’t beat yourself up, baby. You had no way of knowing about Wei’s father.”

“It was my job to know. I think I wanted so badly to believe there’d be no danger that when it happened, I fell off that high horse and hit the mud hard. It’s a good thing you have such a big heart, or I might have made a fuss about letting Yu Yan walk out of here a free woman. I’ll tell you truthfully, making the call to the guys that the baby had reappeared anonymously, and we had no suspects, was one of the hardest things I had to do.”

“But it was the right thing to do. She saved our lives that night.”

“True. I took that into consideration.”

“Plus, she knows all about Wei’s background and is willing to share everything with us.”

“That’s what she said… along with the point that Wei’s father had made his will leaving Wei everything he owned, which sounded quite substantial.”

“You know what?”

“What?”

“The best thing he left her was a name. It was her grandmother’s. You were on the phone calling off the chase when I asked Yu Yan its meaning.”

“Tell me.”

“It means brilliant.”

“Like her mother.” Kurt kissed her, patted the happy, sleeping baby in her arms, and settled his head on the pillow. His eyes closed before the satisfied sigh left his lips.
