By the time Jennie had finished with the paperwork and took two more calls of a similar nature, she felt burned out. It broke something inside her to be forced to see such disgusting behavior by people she thought of as regular folks. How in the world had virulent hatred grown to such proportions under their very noses?

Suddenly checking her watch, she rushed to call home and let them know she’d be late for dinner, a situation that happened more often lately. When she heard her baba’s voice, she began to speak only to hear the words that often made her laugh. Holding her hand over the speaker, she chuckled and waited.

“Hold on, Wnuczka, I untwist phone wire, so I hear you better. There. Talk now.”

Knowing that a twisted cord makes no difference and thinking of the number of times both her and Lisa had tried to explain that to her grandmother, Jennie just grinned and shook her head, filled with tenderness for her favorite lady. Playing along, she raised her voice.

Suddenly, she felt much better about her world and when her baba spoke again that she heard better, she offered to pick up some of her favorite heavenly-hash ice cream for dessert as payment for getting there late.

“Good. I make perogies tonight. With cottage cheese. You favorite. Come quick or Lisa gonna eat them all.”
