Chapter Fourteen

Kane returned home and unlocked his hidden closet where he stored his normal clothes and other shit he’d need to recover his real identity. Showering first, he dressed in his favorite grey suit, smooth white shirt, and silk blue tie. With his hair slicked back rather than hanging in his face, a shave to clean up some of the shadow he’d let grow, and his sunglasses, he went into the closed garage, got into his regular Lexus, and raised the darkened windows before he drove out of the place.

Checking to be sure he wasn’t followed, he intended to update his buddies at the NCTC on the latest news and confirm that the tiny cameras they’d set up all over the house were in working order.

Tonight, he intended to push for info on the Commander of the group and he wanted to guarantee the evidence would be recorded. Now that he knew they had the explosives; time had become important. The march in question was only a few days away, and he needed to be certain they’d be able to arrest everyone involved and have them behind bars before then.

They couldn’t afford to screw up on this case. A lot of lives were at stake, caring people who didn’t deserve the horror of being killed in the streets while they stood up for what they knew to be true.

The night before, Kane had listened for hours to the gang’s disgusting rhetoric and one thing became obvious. Many of the guys who were most vocal had grown up with these opinions taught to them by their parents and grandparents. That cycle needed to end but that wasn’t his game to play. Right now, his job would be to stop the coming violence.

And then reach out to his daughter and pray she’d understand and forgive his behavior. Her expression from when he’d left her earlier haunted him. Filled with loathing, her face had said it all. He only prayed she’d follow his request and keep her story to herself for now.

Lance Bosko fell in love the instant he’d laid eyes on the beauty who Kane had waited for. Wishing he had the right to approach his target with questions as to who the girl was, he stayed back and just watched the scene unfold. Because this was his first morning as backup to a man he held in high esteem, he couldn’t blow it.

As they talked, Lance scanned through his phone, telescoping the girl as close as he could. He punched the button numerous times, so he’d have a record of her.

Light hair waving in the breeze, golden in the sun, he saw her slender build and his heart ramped up. She talked with her hands, a habit his mom had, and he loved watching her expressive behavior.

He’d never felt this instant attraction, and he’d been no slouch with the females in his world. One might have called him a pussy-magnet at one time, but he’d grown up and out of all that nonsense. Now, he only cared about his career and making his way straight up the ladder.

Suddenly he saw Kane’s behavior and noticed Hamster, probably at the same time as Officer Kane did. He understood why Kane had abruptly ended his date with the beauty and instead took off with the slimeball whose expression had brightened with curiosity.

Feeling slighted because he had to follow Kane, even though he’d much rather stay on the girl to learn who she was; he tore his eyes away from her and did his job. But not without making a note that she’d come from the office of the Washington Post.

Following Kane from his house to the NCTC office later, he held back. Knowing the reputation of his target, he’d been kind of surprised that he hadn’t been caught in the act. After all the stories he’d heard about Kane’s many cases, and how the man’s reputation had grown because of incredible skills, he felt quite proud that so far, he’d been able to stay under the radar.

Or at least he did until he looked up through his driver’s window to see Kane nonchalantly leaning down, waiting for him to open it. “So you know, I’ll be here for about an hour. Thought you might like to grab a while I’m gone.”

Lance hit the steering wheel, his disgust obvious. “You know?”

“That you’re tailing me, man. Of course. James has always been an old lady about me going in undercover on my own. I had no doubt he’d be keeping a close watch over me. Just stay in the background so I don’t have to come to your rescue. Things are tightening up now, and we can’t blow this case.”

“Got it.” Lance grinned, using all his well-stocked charm. “So, who’s the chick you were with earlier?”

Kane straightened; his expression changed from playful to annoyed and his tone hardened with a warning. “None of your fucking business. I mean it. She has no part in this. You got that?”

Knowing he’d touched a live wire, feeling a taser-like shock, he straightened his face and nodded. “Got it.”

Slumping, he watched as Kane crossed the street and headed toward the office building. “Son of a bitch!” Now, what the hell was he going to do?
