Gordie shrugged and headed for his own car, Lance treading carefully behind him. They drove off first because Lee had slowed his pace when he and Kane approached his decked-out ride.

Kane sensed this moment meant something to his stepbrother, and so he watched and decided to follow his lead. When he saw how ornate the vehicle was, he knew instantly. “Holy shit, bro. Cool wheels, man. You sure have made something of yourself.”

Puffed up, Lee smirked his pride and grandly waved Kane to get in before he went around to the driver’s side. He opened the door then hung back. “Man, I gotta take a piss. I’ll just be a minute.” Kane watched him in his mirror and saw the man head into the woods and relaxed. He wondered if he’d be able to make it back to the cabin to check on Jennie.

Not taking any chances, he removed his phone and sent the pre-coded message for backup. Then he clenched his hands and waited, praying the whole time that the slight movement he’d seen Jennie make meant she hadn’t been hurt too badly. That she’d be able to either escape the vicinity herself or his team would be there to pick her up.

Kane returned a few seconds later and Kane breathed a sigh of relief that he hadn’t followed his inclination to go to her. It wouldn’t have turned out well for either of them. He didn’t want to take a chance of screwing up this opportunity of bringing down the whole gang. If he worked things right, he intended for his brother to tell him where he had his headquarters so they could move in there too.

Once Lee sat in the driver’s seat, he started the truck, seemed satisfied at the roar of the engine, threw it in gear, and then hurled down the narrow, gravel road. Once he swerved onto the highway, he seemed to relax and after turning the screaming rock music lower, he looked Kane’s way.

“So, kid, what did you do after you took off?”

Not really sure if the topic mattered, nonetheless, Kane answered the way he figured Lee would approve.

“I overheard you and the silly old bastard talking about running from the cops and decided I wanted nothing to do with any of that bullshit. After I took off, I headed for Texas and rolled around there for a while, worked on ranches, got kicked outta bars, laid a lot of ladies, and finally got involved with a militia I figured had a chance to make it big.”

“And did they?”

“Nope. Most were shit-talkers with no brains. I ended up running from the cops again… only this time they were after my ass. Once I’d spent a few years behind bars, I decided I needed to vet my friends better. Got pissed with another bunch one night and one of the guys had family near here. Next thing I know, I’m in D.C. What about you?”

“Cops eventually picked me up for murder, and I took the whole rap because our saintly father kicked the bucket before I could pin it on him.”

Kane broke in, “Which would have been the truth. I heard you giving him hell in the car for going too far. Never could control his temper.”

“No kidding. Remember that time you had to hit him with the frying pan, or he’d have broken my arm? Good thing you got home just then, and he had a hard head.”

Chuckling, as if he found the whole thing as funny as Lee did, he snorted on purpose like their old man had a habit of doing. “Bastard did have his good points.”

This made Lee laugh more. “Damned if I ever saw one.”

Kane motioned to the icepack of beer in front of him on the floor. “These for us, Commander?”

Lee nodded. “Sure, help yourself. You know, I never thought I’d be saying this in my lifetime, but it’s good to see you again, bro. In case Gordie hasn’t brought you up to date on everything, I’ve built up quite an enterprise for myself. It’s growing in leaps and bounds. In fact, I’m on the lookout for someone I can trust.”

Kane snapped the lid off a beer and lifted the can to Lee. Then he helped himself. “Guess I’m interested.” He continued to kiss ass, hoping Lee didn’t pick up on his sarcasm.

“Yeah? You’re the only relative I got which matters.”

“What about the other boys in the Entitled gang? None of them fit the bill?” Kane pumped Lee and hoped he’d get him talking.

“Most are like Gordie. Psychopaths who are willing to do what I ask but no smarts for the organization part of the movement. They’re ready to kill, hell most would do in their own families if asked to, but I need someone I can trust.”

“You know what they say. Blood is thicker than water.”

“Ain’t that the truth.” Lee held out his right hand to shake. “Missed you, bro.”

Kane shook it and grinned, charm dripping. “Backatcha.”
