Sure enough as soon as we pulled up, the ginger-haired Loki-incarnate stepped out. He smiled at us, the grin knowing and playful.

“There’s our damsel in distress,” he said as he leaned in the window to see me better. He was cute, more than that he was a sexy mix of mischievous and strong. His red hair had a slight curl to it, his pale blue eyes striking. He had a smattering of freckles, and I immediately lost all thoughts in my mind. “Did you kick Leven’s ass yet?” The question got me out of my head.

“How do you think I got these?” I joked, holding up my bandaged hands. His eyes widened before he leaned out of the car and barked out a contagious laugh.

“I like her, she’s got my vote,” he said, focusing on the alpha now. “Heading out?”

“We’re going to see if we can spot our target and get some lunch,” Callum told him. “Keep someone on perimeter while I’m gone, I don’t trust him.”

“On it,” Nyx said. His smile fell away as he stepped away, already heading inside after hitting the gate release. Once it was open, Callum hit the gas, speeding down the winding road and back to Dixon.

“You mind stopping by Dave’s?” I asked, realizing it had been a few days since I’d checked in with the poor guy.

“Sure,” he agreed. “But I’m coming in with you.”

“Okay, but I don’t think Dave’s going to bite.” I laughed. “He’s harmless.”

“Yes, but if this tracker knows that’s your truck, he could be waiting inside,” Callum said with a shrug. “I’m not going to take chances.”

“It’s fine,” I reassured him. The fact I needed a protector now just made me angry. Meira would never let me live it down, but maybe if we’d spent a bit more time with protection then she’d still be here because clearly I wasn’t strong or fast enough to save her. A fresh wave of loss hit me, and I stared out the window, willing it to pass quickly.

“So I saw this truck of yours,” Callum said. There was a hint of laughter in his voice.

“Don’t hate on my truck, Alpha, or this will get ugly fast,” I warned. “That’s my baby.”

“Your baby needs a paint job, little wolf. And maybe some serious TLC.” He laughed. “Though I do have to say, it’s sturdy.”

“I knocked out a wolf with it on the way here, that’s what landed me in this mess,” I admitted. “Cracked my radiator just a hair so after a few days driving she was out for the count.”

“Hold up, we’re not just going to speed past that comment like you didn’t make it,” he said incredulously. “You did what?”

“It’s a long story, let’s save that one for lunch,” I said as I hopped out. He’d just parked in front of Dave’s and I was too excited to go into a detailed story.

“Oh, we are definitely coming back to it,” he promised as he followed me inside.

“Hello?” I called out. Dave’s was a bit too quiet. There was no music, nothing. My heart stopped as Callum tensed beside me, stepping in front of me and linking his fingers with mine to keep me from running off. “Dave?”

The sound of footsteps in the back of the building had us pausing and I froze at the sight of the tracker. Just the sight of him had anger overtaking me, and I started to lunge for him but Callum kept me in place.

“She’s in my pack now, you can’t have her,” Callum said firmly. Hearing him claim me like that had my heart clenching, but the asshole just laughed.

“I warned her if she didn’t come with me that I’d start killing.” His voice was haughty and undeterred by Callum’s obvious protectiveness. “If she wants it to stop, she’ll come with me.”

“I’ll never come with you,” I said. “You’ll die before you touch another human.”

“Where is Dave?” Callum repeated my question that the asshole ignored.

“Dead,” he said with a shrug. “This was the most obvious place to find you again since you fled like a coward.”

“Then you’re dead,” Callum said, letting go of me and lunging forward. He shifted mid-leap, his wolf a light brown, fangs bared as he flew at his target. The man took off on foot, running out the back door with the alpha on his heels. Callum might be a sight as a human but his wolf form was downright terrifying. He was huge and imposing and seeing him full of anger would make any sane person cower.

“Was that a wolf?” Dave gasped. I’m not ashamed to admit I yelped like a little girl and clutched my chest as I turned, watching Dave walk up. “I ran out for lunch but saw you guys pull up.”

“Oh my god, you’re alive,” I gasped, crushing the man in a hug like we’d been friends for years. It didn’t make sense for the tracker to lie but I was glad he did. Dave seemed confused but patted my back before I released him. “Uh yeah it looked like a wolf, but he’s gone thankfully.”

“I should lock the door then,” Dave said, rushing over. He was in a rush so he didn’t notice the pile of shredded clothes on the floor. I scooped them up quickly and shoved them in the trash, taking out Callum’s phone, wallet, and keys first. Dave eyed me with amusement as he turned around but I just plastered an innocent smile on my face.

“So, how’s my baby?” That was enough to set him off.
