“So, now we have confirmation of how the tracker is evading us. Does anyone have any knowledge on witches?” There was a hint of desperation to Callum’s voice. Every single one of us shook our heads no. Witches weren’t common. He cursed under his breath before continuing. “We need new tactics. Any progress on the shoot out?” Callum turned to Antonio. He pulled out his laptop from the desk and opened it. Clicking for a few moments of tense silence, he finally frowned. My chest tightened at the reminder of that awful night but the fact Leven nearly died was enough to keep me grounded.

“Nothing. The trail runs cold after they leave that exact street. There’s nothing on the streets leaving town and I even checked feeds nearby. It’s a dead end. But I’m going to keep working to see if I can clean up the stills and get the plates,” he promised.

“I put out feelers to the alpha network, but I’ve gotten no real answers,” Callum sighed. “This is insanity.”

“I’ve got some contacts I can try. Including one who’s a witch,” Garren supplied. I’d forgotten he was even here. I started to turn but Leven stopped me with a large hand covering my eyes.

“Don’t turn. You don’t want to see that,” he teased, making me snort.

“Boy, I’ll whoop your ass,” Garren said with a chuckle. “Fine. This has been enough excitement for me, and I have my own calls to make. Be safe tonight.”

“Thanks, Garren. For keeping her safe,” Callum said.

Leven dropped his hand when Garren’s footsteps receded and I tried not to laugh at the fact he was likely walking through the streets, completely naked. Pack life was a bit weird at times.

“In that case. I’m taking her home,” Callum said, dismissing everyone. “Unless?” He turned to Leven. My breath caught as I waited, seeing if Leven was going to fight it.

“I need to heal. Take her. I’m afraid he might track me now that I’ve made contact with him. He won’t need to recover for long with magic on his side,” Leven said. There was a hint of defeat in his tone and I turned, giving him a tight hug.

“Thanks for trying to catch him,” I whispered in his ear. He didn’t say anything right away, but he squeezed me back just as tight.

“I’ll get him for you, Vanya. Mark my words.”

ChapterSixteen

Vanya

The forest closed in around me, trees growing more dense as I ran as fast as I could. Paws pounded into the dirt as the tracker followed me, only a few feet behind. My legs and lungs burned as I pushed my body to its limits, knowing that if he caught me, it would mean death… or worse. This had gone past an assignment and into an obsession with him.

I came barreling out of the trees right at the edge of the Bluffs, nearly toppling over the edge before I caught myself. He was on me before I could move, shifting as he pinned me down. His hair still hung in limp, greasy clusters and his cold, hollow eyes stared down at me as his mouth twisted into a soulless grin.

“Finally, you’re mine,” he said, leaning down and breathing me in. I was a human now, somehow forced to shift under his body.

“What are you?” I accused. “You’re no simple wolf.”

“No,” he agreed. “And you’re going to die here tonight, your corpse thrown into the river. They’ll never find you.”

Panic clawed at my throat, making my already stunted breathing, harder. He seemed to notice and leaned harder against me.

“Fuck you. You’ll never have me,” I promised. But my words cut off as he pulled out a silver dagger. My screams echoed in the night as he slammed it into my chest.

“Vanya!” Callum said, shaking me almost violently. He let out a relieved breath as I blinked my eyes open. “You were yelling in your sleep.”

“Nightmare,” I admitted. My forehead was beaded with sweat and the large t-shirt I’d borrowed from Callum was sticking to my body. “The tracker.”

“We’re all okay. Leven’s fine, little wolf,” he said. His eyebrows were drawn together as he studied my face. We’d been so exhausted when we got back, the mood killed by the intrusion, we’d just gone to sleep to the sound of cooking show reruns on the TV.

“I know,” I sighed. “Apparently my mind didn’t care. I’m going to take a shower.”

“Come on,” he said evenly, holding out a hand for me. I took it and let him lead me down the hall and into another bedroom. This one didn’t have a bed but was set up like a gaming lounge. The bathroom though had a huge shower that we could both easily fit in. Sometimes I forget how big these homes are. Especially with how busy I’d been between working the kitchens, helping Garren, and sleeping in that tiny room. But I grew a bit fond of the lack of windows. It felt safer. Though I’d never admit that to any of the guys here.

I was in such a trance that he had to pull my shirt off and drag me under the hot spray before my brain came back online.

“You with me now?” He chuckled as I pulled my wet hair out of my eyes. I was almost positive that I looked like an impersonation of a drowned rat but he didn’t seem to mind.

“I am,” I sighed. “I guess tonight got to me more than I realized. Gah, that dream felt so real. He chased me to the Bluffs and forced me to shift, pinning me down, then stabbed me in the heart.”

“Damn, that’s dark, little wolf,” he said gently. He massaged my shoulders as I shook it off. “What can I do to help?”
